What's frivolous about China's claim to the land?

I don't know about the northern islands (the ones it has in dispute with Japan and Korea), but China is claiming the whole of what's known as "South China Sea" for itself when that area is just not near China compared to the other countries that actually surround it (Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia).


Here, China is claiming the whole area within the red lines.

But that area is not really the cause of this issue, so it's off-topic.

If only we had a magical establishment that is supposed to step in and have all sides sit down until a truce can be made so that there can be peace. Oh Wait...

Still the fact that the protests are being allowed over a matter that the government is interested in as opposed to one they are totally against makes me feel kind of like punching somebody. Am I assuming correctly that because the government wants these islands that they are allowing the protests where as anything that they are opposed to will end with protestors getting run over by tanks? Bad tatse, I know, but you get my point. This coming from a guy who believes in love and let love.

Well, I think that China actually recorded those islands and visited them first, but seeing as how they are closer to other countries, it is open for dispute.

The reason for the dispute's escalation is Japan's actions against China in the past with controlling their territory. China believes that this is their territory, so the residual anger from that time rises back.

Well, this is because it's easier to see or hear something when almost everyone agrees on it. Disputes actually are done by officials and the protests are done by the civilians. When they agree, you see both.

Well, now they set fire to a Samsung factory, failing to realize that it's a Korean company. Mind you they have attacked "Japanese sounding" stores and product's, most of them being ether wholly Chinese or otherwise not-Japanese.

Some foreign-owned stores are going as far as to proclaim their support for China's claim so as to not be attacked. Hell, even Sora Aoi, former JAV actress and current idol powerhouse in China has done the same.

Add to that's, China's foreign minister stated that they want Japan to pay for the damage cause due to the rioting, since they started it by not just giving them the islands.

That's going too far. Some protestors don't know why they protest. They should just vote for reality television instead.

Why am I reminded of the L.A. riots?

The fact is once the train gets moving and enough people get on it that, eventually, the masses stop paying attention and everyone gets hurt. This isn't a tea party move (that was well planed and creative), this is just a bunch of people who haven't gotten along in generations wanting somthing to fight about. I'm going to stop now before I go on a long rant about human nature versus personal choice.

Still it isn't like these things havn't happened before only to be resolved by some little thing or other. Japan will probably make an appel to the U.N. and once enough nations get together on CHina's case the government will back down. The island will probably be given to whoever makes the best claim for them in the ineviatble U.N. meet and Japan won't have to pay damages due to the actions of Chinese citizens destroying themselves. The wheel keeps turning and we all find somthign else to talk about. Of course my understanding of the international political system is hazy at best...

Well, the islands probably will go to China. China is holding the economy in its hands and the government is more of a collective mind than other governments, so it can cripple Japan very fast without hesitation. It already has begun and it will get worse until Japan surrenders the islands.

You are right. Must be that special I watched a NatGeo a few weeks ago.

Still I guess it all depends on how stubborn Japan is. They may have the collective mentality of "if we give this up then what next?" They may be willing to have their economic state, as well as those of other nations, take a hit just to show China they won't budge. Then it will definately require an international intervention. Everyone owes china somthing though so it is hard to say how far any nation is willing to go just for, what I understand to be, a few islands with no truely important political or military worth. Probably wrong about the latter part, however. This might just turn out to be nothing but a push in shove between nations that really need to work things out.

That being said I seriously doubt anyone involed is willing to take military action over it, or so I hope...and pray...and try not to think to hard about...
