A question for "Ultraman fans".

Given how limited the resources for subbing are in the tokusatsu community, I'm surprised there's been as much Ultra completed to date as there has been.

I think fansubbers do what they can based on feedback and what people actually want to see. Theres just not enough Ultraman fans out there. Dont blame us for that...

Well, I think there's some legit gripe to be made in that Ultraman gets largely ignored or sometimes even casually dismissed by most of the US tokusatsu fandom and usually for some very stupid reasons. I guess for some at least it's just not "OMG epicbadass:buttrock:" enough because there's not a bajillion toys and anti-heroic secondary shitheads running around.

At the same though, dogging Sentai or KR on the whole or saying stuff like people who like Nexus aren't real Ultraman fans does nothing to help the cause.

I enjoy Sentai and Rider. There are more of those shows that I like than Ultraman BUT there are plenty of Ultra shows I like as well. Also, there's also Sentai and Rider shows that just suck. There are also Ultra shows that just suck.

I'll bitch about a show I don't like or a creative direction or trends that run across many shows that I don't like or think are a bad way to go but at the same time I expect that there's no way in hell any franchise that has been running for years and years is gonna get it right every time. There's also no way that they can run that long without having at least one or two incarnations that somebody can enjoy.

I mean if some of you folks out there have no problem with the over-the-top goofyness in GoOnger or Den-O there's really nothing that should be stopping you from giving Mebius a shot. Likewise if some of you really dig on dramatic tone and moody atomosphere of Kuuga or Agito or Faiz then trust me when I say Ultraman Next and Nexus are going to be right up your alley. For those who like Black or like 80's/90's Sentai try Tiga, Dyna, or Gaia.

I mean really, the next time anyone here is feeling like "oh I don't like this years Rider or this years Sentai" you should damn well try an Ultra show, be it new or old. Simple fact of life: toku has 3 big, iconic, long running, time honored franchises not just 2.

I'm not going to sit through a series I dont like, and the core of Ultraman (the giant people fights) dont appeal to me. I didnt watch Kiva, and I'm not gonna watch this. Not unless something drastic changes my mind.

It does piss me off when you make a casual comparison and it gets shot down just because whoever you're talking too isn't familiar with Ultraman and is, I don't know, taking an Ultra mention as a personal attack.

Like, let's say you say "Well, I think Nexus was a better dark hero show than Faiz because..." or "I think Moebius was better at telling a fanservicey story then Decade because..." I mean, I think these are valid comparisons, they were made around the same time and tackle pretty similar themes.

Instead of someone paying attention to your comparison, even if they don't know the Ultra in question, you sometimes get guys shouting at you OMG YOU CAN'T COMPARE KR AND ULTRA THEY ARE NOTHING ALIKE ULTRA GETS BIG.

And that's... that's depressing. That mentality is so stupid and petty and defensive that it's just really depressing. Japanese superheroes are Japanese superheroes, whether large or small or in teams or on motorcycles.

I don't actually remember names here, just I've seen people freak out over mere comparisons of KR and Ultra in a way that's highly illogical and a little insulting.

I mean, I don't like Den-O. But if someone said something like "I think the way the different forms worked in Den-O was better than Kuuga because in Den-O they had different personalities," I mean... I don't agree with that? But it's a totally valid comparison and a valid opinion.

If I shouted OMG YOU CANNOT COMPARE KUUGA AND DEN-O BECAUSE DEN-O IS TIME-TRAVEL at this person, I would be conducting myself like a complete douchebag.

I think the YouTube video of Those two Kaiju and one of the Ultraman fighting, then one of the Kaiju's jaws get torn off, and fake blood splatters everywhere turned me off of the whole series.

As I mentioned in the Goseiger rumor thread, I'm a hemophobic. I couldn't really get into Kamen Rider Amazon for that reason as well...

Now if I never saw the video, I may be one of those die-hard Ultra fans :laugh:

Well maybe you shoulda just asked me yourself via PM or in the thread by that crazy-ass poster. Oh wait, it was me! :O_O: I wanna know why SS fans feel they need to start another thread feeling so coy and clever, instead of just asking me in the thread in question? That's a doozie. Ironically this thread has almost no one looking at it, as opposed to the other thread in question.

And for the record, the reason Ultraman fans act like evangelistic converters is because SS fans have shown a tendency to be very defensive. But, I don't know where they would get that idea from :rolleyes2:

Sorry for calling you out, but I did feel like you were taking the situation too far. I also didnt want to derail the thread anymore than it already was, hence creating this thread.

Honestly, I did not do this for the views. I did this cuz I genuinely wanted to hear the reasoning behind it. Every fan defends their favorite series. What I wanted to know is why Ultraman fans felt it as their duty to put down other series just to get people to watch theirs more. If you can't answer that, then you may just be fighting the good fight blindly.

Ultraman always fucking gets the end of the stick in this fandom. Fansubbers have basically ignored most ultra series and those that have done ultra series besides fegushi have died[tokuplex] or have stopped doing the series in general[mebius tv-nihon]. it hasn't been until recently that interest has gone up with Ultraman again thanks to MMBUGLTM. YET BOTH ULTRA GALAXY SERIES WERE IGNORED. HNT just started Neos, Sgt Kira Productions is currently on their way to doing Dyna and I've heard hints of HON doing Gaia. Aside from little leaks of Subs and Dubs from DVD. Everything else gets ignored.

If you feel that Ultraman is getting ignored in the fansub community and you genuinely love it, than you would have been one of the first ones to go ahead and create a fansub group dedicated to the Ultraman series. Waiting around for other fansub groups to do it for you wont get you anywhere. The current fansub groups liked the show enough to go ahead and start their own group. Why can't fans of Ultraman do the same?

I havent watched as much Ultraman as I have KR or SS, but I watched Nexus plus the movie and loved it. Im working my way through Mebius and Im also enjoying it. Ive seen bits of Dyna and Id like to see a lot more of it. If a fansub group came about that was dedicated to Ultraman subs, Id be all over it, as would a lot of people. But, it starts with a few people who want to make a difference and do more than just complain about the lack of appreciation.

Im sure a lot more people do respect what Ultraman has done for the genre. But, the fact that more people like KR or SS shouldnt really matter. You enjoy what you like, others will do the same. It shouldnt get to the point where you have to complain about it in every thread possible. There are enough like-minded people on this thread that someone will find a gruop of people to relate too, as well as people who question aspects of the show which would then hopefully spark healthy converstaion.

I can't really see how people can still say anything like this, there really isn't anything that makes them seem the same outside of use of silver and red. You can't tell me that Nexus (in any mood) looks anything like the original Ultraman, or that Tiga and 80 look alike at all.

Cause you're probably not truly a hemophiliac? Not that I'm disputing your claims, but it's likely you only show symptoms of it when it isn't as bad as you think.
