Where is the video that the screencaps come from?
Could you please post it?

Puella Madoca Magica redefined Mahou Shoujo for me. It turned that genre from a toy-spewing cutsyfest to a serious, gritty and harsh world. I love the dude for it.

Man, sorry for going off topic, but it really gets on my nerves when people say this. It's like you're discrediting and homogenizing an entire genre that has given us phenomenal well-loved and acclaimed classics like Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon and more. Just like how each Kamen Rider is different from the last, Magical Girls as a genre is also varied and diverse with only several common elements tying them together.

Want mature and thought-provoking? What about Revolutionary Girl Utena and Princess Tutu? Want crazy genre-redefining destructive fight sequences? Precure and Nanoha have that covered. Looking at the genre from this angle, what Madoka has done isn't all too earth-shattering. Madoka is a brilliant series because it's well written, not because it seeks to be everything that a Magical Girl series is not - because it keeps all the core elements of what a Magical Girl series is all about.

Behind the misconception of the genre being a 'cutsyfest', is a world of awesome characters and stories. All I can hope is that people not be swayed by these stereotypes and actually give the genre a chance.

Now, let me go put down my pre-orders for that Madoka shower curtain and bucket.

Adding to Actar's points, all of which I agree with pretty much completely: Urobuchi has outright said that Madoka Magica isn't meant to be any kind of deconstruction of the genre, and that's borne out in the series - it's not going "Lolz, ~subverting the magical girl genre into something dark and awful~," it's got the same themes of 'hope and friendship overcoming all' that, say, Cardcaptor Sakura has, dialled up to ninety.

On a more general note, I'm looking forward to seeing what Urobuchi does with Gaim. Dude does some of his best work when he's not working with very dark material - much as I love Madoka Magica and Psycho-Pass, Gargantia affected me far more than either of them - and he has a good sense for when to balance pathos with light-heartedness.

Also, I'm hoping for grape-rider (Ryugen?) to be a woman. It probably won't happen, but I live in hope.

True. Very true. And, you know, given that this is a bunch of Kamen Rider fans who have NO DOUBT had to point out to people that no, Kamen Rider is NOT Power Rangers, or a ripoff of Power Rangers, and generally getting wound up by people discrediting and homogenizing toku down to the one level they understand in PR...well, you'd think they'd be more open to not generalising in such a way.

Yeah, Ryugen is a guy, he's not that bad an actor. Or wasn't in the bits I've seen him in, at least. But it does leave us with four male Riders and once again, no females. I wonder if this one will pass the Bechdel Test?
