Turtle Paint: A Different Kind Of NES Homebrew
Weight of the world got you down? Don’t get mad, don’t stay sad — paint a turtle!
Joe Sherman, creator of the award-winning 2019 NES game Turtle Rescue, is about to release his second shelled reptile related project….this one vastly different not just from his first game but from most NES homebrews out there. Shut in at his house during the pandemic, he had the idea to use his free time to create a different kind of retro gaming experience.
You don’t win anything in Turtle Paint; there’s no time limit or enemies to fight…it’s simply what it says. It’s a digital coloring book featuring the characters from Turtle Rescue. To date there is only one other released coloring game for the NES, but Joe swears his is better:
We’re not gonna argue with that.
The Turtle Paint campaign just launched now, and though there are 30 days left in it, only Day One backers will have the chance at a one-of-a kind, special edition “Painters Club” physical cart that has a case splattered with paint dots. They are at the most expensive tier ($120) but we guarantee these will be gone by Day 2 — half have been sold already as of this writing.
There are plenty of more affordable options than that one, even physical, so no worries. The cheapest copy is the digital one at an $8 pledge — you get the game and a PDF of the manual. A cartridge costs $35, or if you don’t mind spending extra to get it sooner, an “I Want It Now” tier of the first ten copies is currently available at $10 higher. The box and packaging for Turtle Paint comes with a $52 pledge.
The Turtle Paint campaign will be open until September 7.
