YouTuber John Riggs is one of the big names when it comes to videos about retro games….and lately, he’s started making some himself! (Would they really be “retro” in that sense?) His latest project is a collaboration with Lowtek Games: Chew Chew Mimic. The crowdfunding campaign to produce physical NES carts is now live.
You’re no doubt familiar with the mimic as a concept. A monster that appears in D&D and video game RPGs in the guise of a treasure chest. When the hero opens it, they discover snapping jaws instead of loot. This creature is at the centerpiece of John’s new game, in which you’ve got to guide hapless knights through various dungeon rooms. The knights move on their own, and you must direct their movement by placing tiles carefully so they dodge obstacles and don’t become stuck. The goal is to get the knight to the end of the room….and into the mouth of the mimic. Yep, you’re ultimately helping the mimic.
- 4 different knight types to consider on different stages.
- 100 stages with a cut scene between every 5th stage.
- 3 different endings!
- There may even be a cameo or two of a couple of previous NES indie homebrews. You’ll just have to watch out for them.
- CIB copies of this game will be manufactured by Mega Cat Studios
The cheapest way to play Chew Chew Mimic is to buy the digital copy at a $15 pledge. The physical version (cart only) comes at a $40 pledge. A proper box and instruction manual moves it up to a $60 pledge. You can also get a Chew Chew Mimic air freshener for a $10 pledge (but no game).
Check out John’s video below for more on Chew Chew Mimic, and watch for the game this July. The Kickstarter campaign closes up May 23.
