New NES Game Chew Chew Mimic Launches Kickstarter

YouTuber John Riggs is one of the big names when it comes to videos about retro games….and lately, he’s started making some himself! (Would they really be “retro” in that sense?) His latest project is a collaboration with Lowtek Games: Chew Chew Mimic. The crowdfunding campaign to produce physical NES carts is now live.

You’re no doubt familiar with the mimic as a concept. A monster that appears in D&D and video game RPGs in the guise of a treasure chest. When the hero opens it, they discover snapping jaws instead of loot. This creature is at the centerpiece of John’s new game, in which you’ve got to guide hapless knights through various dungeon rooms. The knights move on their own, and you must direct their movement by placing tiles carefully so they dodge obstacles and don’t become stuck. The goal is to get the knight to the end of the room….and into the mouth of the mimic. Yep, you’re ultimately helping the mimic.

  • 4 different knight types to consider on different stages.
  • 100 stages with a cut scene between every 5th stage.
  • 3 different endings!
  • There may even be a cameo or two of a couple of previous NES indie homebrews. You’ll just have to watch out for them.
  • CIB copies of this game will be manufactured by Mega Cat Studios

The cheapest way to play Chew Chew Mimic is to buy the digital copy at a $15 pledge. The physical version (cart only) comes at a $40 pledge. A proper box and instruction manual moves it up to a $60 pledge. You can also get a Chew Chew Mimic air freshener for a $10 pledge (but no game).

Check out John’s video below for more on Chew Chew Mimic, and watch for the game this July. The Kickstarter campaign closes up May 23.

Chew Chew Mimic looks like a nostalgic romp through classic RPG tropes with a modern twist. I'm intrigued by the idea of guiding knights through dungeon rooms filled with mimics and using tile placement to control their movements. The promise of different endings and potential cameos adds to the appeal. While I'm not typically one for physical copies, the prospect of owning a CIB version of this game is tempting. I'll definitely be considering backing this project to support indie game developers and add another gem to my NES collection!

I love the concept of guiding knights through dungeon rooms filled with mimics, and the gameplay mechanics involving tile placement seem innovative. The inclusion of different knight types and multiple endings adds depth to the experience. While I'm usually more of a digital gamer, the prospect of owning a physical copy with box and manual is tempting. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this project as it develops!

Whoa, a new NES game with physical carts? Now that's something I don't see every day. John Riggs making his own game? That's a double dose of awesome! I gotta admit, I'm a sucker for anything NES, so I'm pretty tempted by that $60 tier with the box and manual. Those would look sweet on my shelf next to my other retro games.

I'm not usually one to back Kickstarter projects, but Chew Chew Mimic has me intrigued. The concept of guiding knights through dungeon rooms filled with mimics sounds like a fun challenge, and I appreciate the attention to detail with different knight types and multiple endings. While I'm hesitant to shell out for a physical copy, the digital option seems like a reasonable investment for a unique gaming experience. I'll be sure to check out John Riggs' video for more information before making a decision.
