Sega Turns Pseudo-3D Into Actual 3D With Gunstar Heroes Rerelease
As you might know, Sega has been taking some of its arcade classics like Space Harrier and OutRun, converting them to stereoscopic 3D and selling them on the 3DS eShop. It’s an interesting idea, since a lot of these games used pseudo-3D effects to fake the look of a changing perspective, and now these fake effects are actually appearing in 3D for real.
Well, the granddaddy of fake-3D games is about to be adapted for the stereo screen. Gunstar Heroes, Treasure’s technical tour-de-force action shooter, is undergoing the conversion process and will be available for download in the 3DS’s eShop by August.
That’s quite a ways away (in announcement terms for recycled downloads), but Gunstar Heroes is just that interesting. Treasure was good at milking every last drop of processing power from the consoles they worked on, especially the Genesis. They figured out various ways to display scaling, rotation, and every other early 3D trick the SNES claimed as exclusive selling points, and their shooters were quite dizzying to behold. If there was any game that was meant to eventually be seen in 3D, it’s Gunstar Heroes.
Sega has also announced two other Genesis titles will be getting the 3D conversion treatment: Streets of Rage II in July and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in September. While a 3D Sonic 2 will probably get the most attention, Gunstar Heroes is worth checking out. Even if you plan to play in 2D, the game still holds up.
