Jean-Claude Van Damme is Coming to Mortal Kombat 1

Jean-Claude Van Damme was offered the role of Johnny Cage in the very first Mortal Kombat game decades ago, back in the early ’90s. He was at the height of his career during those times and gained mainstream attention when he became the lead actor in the movie “Bloodsport.”

If you look at the very first Johnny Cage sprite from the old Mortal Kombat games, you’ll notice that Daniel Pesina, Johnny Cage’s old sprite model, was wearing an outfit similar to what Jean-Claude Van Damme wore in “Bloodsport.” Ed Boon always wanted Jean-Claude Van Damme to play Johnny Cage in any kind of media, but during the ’90s, he was too popular and expensive.

Decades later, in 2023, Jean-Claude Van Damme finally agreed to play the character designed after him. He will be available as a downloadable skin for Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 1. You might be wondering why he’s only available as DLC; that’s because there will still be a default Johnny Cage model that does not resemble Jean-Claude Van Damme for people who don’t prefer the likeness.

I’m still not sure if Jean-Claude Van Damme is voicing Johnny Cage for that special skin, but he does have a different voice actor from the default Johnny Cage model in Mortal Kombat 1. Johnny Cage usually has a bodybuilder physique, but in Mortal Kombat 1, he was leaner to make him more similar to Jean-Claude Van Damme in the film “Bloodsport.”

I admit, I was a little disappointed with this skin because he’s stuck in one outfit, and you cannot change what he wears. Also, he doesn’t look like a young Jean-Claude Van Damme. I still see features of his default Johnny Cage model.

The Nitara character model, played and voiced by Megan Fox, looks exactly like Megan Fox. The Homelander character model, who is also part of the game’s roster, looks exactly like Anthony Starr. The John Cena Peacemaker DLC character looks like John Cena and will be voiced by John Cena, looking exactly like him.

But this Jean-Claude Van Damme… Johnny Cage still needs some tweaking to make him look like the real actor. I do hope that they can fix this character’s skin before the final release because he looks nothing like the actor. This is supposed to be Ed Boon’s dream come true, but he really needs some tweaking because he looks nothing like Jean-Claude Van Damme.”

"I think this Johnny Cage character model looks a bit off because it seems like they captured the current-day Jean-Claude Van Damme and tried to make him look younger with CGI. It's probably a challenging task to recreate his youthful self accurately. Interestingly, they did a better job with young Sylvester Stallone as Rambo and young Arnold Schwarzenegger as Terminator in Mortal Kombat 11; those characters looked more convincing."

I mean, seriously, he doesn't give off that young Jean-Claude Van Damme ringer at all. It's more like watching a middle-aged dude going all-in on a Jean-Claude Van Damme cosplay. LOL.

You know, I find that Johnny Cage's Mortal Kombat 1 Jean-Claude Van Damme model looks a bit off because he's all goofy, silly, and even dorky. Jean-Claude Van Damme, on the other hand, usually comes off as a serious badass. I can't even recall him starring in a comedy film because he typically takes on serious roles. He's not really known for his acting; it's his martial arts skills that shine in movies.

It's fascinating to see how Ed Boon's original vision for Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat was this arrogant action star who joined the tournament to prove that his stunts were real and not fake. As the character evolved over the years, he turned into this wacky, childish, and happy-go-lucky guy. Quite a shift from the serious roles we've seen Jean-Claude Van Damme play in his movies.

So, it totally makes sense why Jean-Claude Van Damme acting like Johnny Cage might feel a bit off. But, you know, this is Ed Boon's dream, and he's finally seen it come to life after years of rejection. It's pretty remarkable how the character and the game have evolved over time.

Haha, it's kind of funny, right? Jean-Claude Van Damme finally accepting the role after all those years of rejection. Some might say it's because he doesn't have the same career he once did, you know, a bit of a has-been now. It does make you wonder how different it might have been if he'd taken on the role during his prime. ?

Why make Jean-Claude Van Damme as Johnny Cage a DLC skin when it feels like such a cool addition? It almost seems like it should've been a default option from the get-go. ?

You know, in my opinion, Jean-Claude Van Damme isn't really known for his acting skills. He's a martial arts legend on screen, no doubt, but when it comes to acting, he's not exactly in line for an Oscar or a Golden Globe. So, personally, I have my doubts about him voicing Johnny Cage in the story mode, especially given the stark differences in their personalities.

I can see why you're a bit let down. It's a bummer the skin doesn't quite capture the young Van Damme vibe. ?Megan Fox and John Cena lookalikes are on point, but they gotta work on that Van Damme likeness, dude!

Totally get the need for tweaking. Jean-Claude Van Damme's gotta look like himself, not just a random guy, you know? ?‍♂ī¸Let's hope they fine-tune that skin! Ed Boon's dream should not be halfassed
