Given the volume of video game music cover albums GamwChops puts out yearly, it only makes sense they should release one dedicated to Mario Galaxy while the movie based on it is dominating box office charts. Piano & Sleep: Mario Galaxy is a new piano album from composer and producer Curly featuring sleep-friendly arrangements inspired by the Super Mario Galaxy series.
It’s quite the transition from what the Galaxy soundtrack is — big, boisterous orchestra scores meant to evoke the immensity of planets and the cosmos. Curly takes the original songs composed by Koji Kondo and Mahito Yokota and softens them down quite a bit, turning them into lo-fi piano lullabies meant for relaxing and dozing off.
“I was around at just the right time to still be an impressionable kid when the Wii came out, so the Super Mario Galaxy games naturally have a place in my heart,” reflects Tom “Curly” Thomas. “Despite being so familiar with the games and having been playing the piano for decades now, making piano lullabies out of big and sometimes very intense orchestral scores was more challenging than expected! That said, I think the arrangements turned out great and I’m very proud of them, and I’m thankful to GameChops for giving me the opportunity and support to make them and put them out into the world. I hope everyone who listens enjoys them as much as I do!”
You can now find Piano & Sleep: Mario Galaxy on the digital and streaming platforms listed through this link.
