PEACEMAKER TRIES HARD! #2Ā -Ā DC Comics Solicitations June 2023

John Cena and JK Simmons will reprise their roles in Mortal Kombat 1

John Cena and J.K. Simmons are set to reprise their roles as Peacemaker and Omni-Man in Mortal Kombat 1. Just a month ago, Peacemaker, Omni-Man, and Homelander were announced as guest DLC characters for Mortal Kombat 1, joining returning favorites like Quan Chi, Ermac, and Takeda. In Mortal Kombat 11, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger lent their likenesses during their prime to portray the Terminator and Rambo. While these DLCs were well-received and popular in tournaments, they were not voiced by the actors who provided their likenesses.

This time, however, J.K. Simmons, known for his role as Omni-Man in Invincible, will be lending his voice to his iconic supervillain character from the controversial Amazon Prime animated series. John Cena, originally playing Homelander in the Suicide Squad film, gained immense popularity and even secured his own TV series, which has been renewed for a second season. This unexpected success has led some to view Cena’s DC comic run as surpassing Dwayne Johnson‘s portrayal of Black Adam.

John Cena isn’t the first WWE Superstar to voice a Mortal Kombat character. In Mortal Kombat 11, Ronda Rousey lent her voice to Sonya Blade, without providing her likeness. It seems Ronda didn’t want to associate herself with the character’s potentially brutal demise, unlike John Cena who appears unfazed.

Fans are now eagerly hoping that Anthony Starr, the actor behind Homelander in The Boys, will also reprise his role in the game. While Starr provided his likeness, it’s still uncertain if he’ll be voicing Homelander. Negotiations with NetherRealm Studios might be ongoing, and enthusiasts are optimistic about a positive outcome. If not, they’re hopeful that a suitable voice actor can do justice to Homelander’s character.

Another celebrity joining the lineup is Jean-Claude Van Damme, who was actually Ed Boon’s original choice to play Johnny Cage during the 2D digitized sprites era in the 90s. However, budget constraints prevented this back then. Decades later, Van Damme has agreed to become Johnny Cage, with a DLC skin resembling him and featuring his voice. For those not fond of Van Damme, a default Johnny Cage option will still be available.

Oh, fantastic, John Cena's in the game. Just what I needed, a chance to unleash some virtual murder on him. It's hilarious, really. I am his biggest hater, but having him here means I can finally dish out some much-needed revenge. Those fatalities are going to be so satisfying, because uts his actual screams? Oh, they'll be like therapy for me. So yeah, I guess I'm strangely looking forward to this.

I can't help but recall how John Cena's overpushed babyface persona practically bulldozed the careers of so many talented wrestlers. It's infuriating how he was continually shoved into the spotlight even when fans were clearly booing him. The way he buried potential stars like Ryback, Bray Wyatt, and even Zack Ryder was a tragedy for wrestling. It's especially painful to think about Bray Wyatt's recent passing; his potential was snuffed out.

Using Peacemaker as the training mode dummy is going to be cathartic, a chance to vent all that frustration and disappointment. It's a way to channel that anger and dedicate everything in-game to Bray Wyatt's memory. Rest in peace, Bray Wyatt. Your legacy deserves better than being overshadowed by an overpushed figure.

Oh man, I can't believe John Cena is back in the ring, or should I say, in Mortal Kombat! Peacemaker was already awesome in the Suicide Squad, and now he's bringing that energy to the game. This DLC is a dream come true for fans like me!

I hope Anthony Starr says yes to voicing Homelander in the game. He let them use his face, so why not his voice too? And I really wish more characters from The Boys show up in the game later on. That would be awesome!

I couldn't care less about these guest characters; all I want is for Cassie Cage to be a Mortal Kombat 1 DLC. She's been my main in Mortal Kombat 10 and 11, and it just hasn't felt right without her. I mean, not even her mom, Sonya Blade, is playable? It's disappointing. I'm really crossing my fingers that Cassie Cage makes a comeback.

I'm genuinely curious about how they'll differentiate Omni-Man and Homelander in the game. Both characters draw inspiration from Superman, and it does seem challenging to make them stand out from each other. Their powers are quite similar, so I'm wondering if they'll focus on unique fighting styles, special moves, or maybe even alter their power sets slightly to create a distinction. It's definitely a puzzle how they'll make two Superman-esque characters feel distinct in the gameplay.

I've got a hunch that John Cena might have taken up voicing Peacemaker due to the ongoing strikes in Hollywood. With the writer's and actor's strikes, it's probably tough to land roles in movies and television right now. Given that video games have become incredibly popular, especially in comparison to non-interactive media, it could be a strategic move to ensure he stays in the spotlight during these uncertain times.
