James Gunn Wants Marvel and DC Films To Succeed
Fan pride can be a beautiful thing, however, it can also be incredibly destructive when it comes to debates about “who is better”, or, “what brand is better”, or more recently, “what films are better.” With DC Comics now fully in movie area with the DCEU, and Suicide Squad officially making over $700 and beating several Marvel Cinematic movie films, the debate has never been more hot for whether DC or Marvel is better.
The brutality of these debates are actually very well documented, and it pulls in just about everyone into its clutches. One man who aims to break this trend is James Gunn, director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films. He tells Variety that he honestly doesn’t care about comparing his films to anyone elses, Marvel or DC:
“I just don’t find any room in my headspace for thinking my movies are superior or inferior to someone else’s,” he said, before moving on to his main concern for the moment. “I really just think about how can I make, for instance right now, how can I make ‘Guardians Vol. 2’ the greatest spectacle film of all time? That’s all I care about so that’s what I concentrate on.”
He even went on to say that he views all these movies equally, because he’s a fan first, and just wants them to be good:
“[A]ny time a Marvel movie comes out that isn’t as good as I wished it was or anytime a DC movie comes out that isn’t as I wished it was, I’m disappointed because I love these characters,” he added. “I grew up reading Marvel and DC comics. I want them all to be good.”
