Guardians of the Galaxy: Drax Seeks Vengeance in Animated Shorts
Marvel Entertainment has unleashed the latest animated prequel shorts for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy animated TV series. You can check out the latest shorts, featuring the backstory of Drax the Destroyer, in the players below.
The first part shows Drax the Destroyer as a gladiator in an alien arena. He is competing for an opportunity to become a minion of the Kree warlord Ronan the Accuser. The young and innocent daughter of one of Drax’s opponents begs for Drax to lose, afraid for her father’s life. Drax refuses but promises not to harm him. Drax ultimately wins, but he takes pity on the girl’s father as he is taken prisoner for life as a slave to Ronan. In the second part, Drax liberates the girl and her father, but their escape has them run afoul of the Nova Corps. Drax bargains his freedom and gives himself up without a fight to the Nova Corps in exchange for the freedom of Ronan’s other alien prisoners.
The Nova Corps here are very similar to the way they were depicted in the films. There is even a character modeled similar to the movie version of Rhomann Dey, played by John C. Reilly in the live-action film. Interestingly enough, among the Nova Corps in the short was Titus, who previously appeared as a villain in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. There he was a former Nova Corps member who was out to get Nova aka Sam Alexander’s special helmet. It could be a loose connection to that series. The second short ends with Drax in the Kyln prison, similar to the first live-action movie.
Next up for the animated Guardians of the Galaxy shorts will be Gamora. Guardians of the Galaxy is set to premiere with a special sneak preview event on next month Disney XD on September 5. The regular series premieres on September 26 on Disney XD.
