Hmm... maybe a discreet item that can then turn into a Sword before the transformation? ;p

I'm not big on Weapon that are henshin devices but I guess the sword held aloft thing IS kinda cool.

also if She-Ra could have used that sword to HIT things it would have been WAY better than He-Man.

She-Ra's voice is too high pitched if you ask me. I like the adult and mature voice she had in the old French dub

Well I suppose you could take the approach that the device is just a handle and hilt when being carried around. Then blade would then rise or form when activated for henshin. Once again, an awesome example from the 80's:
