This is honestly my favorite book at the moment not because it is the best written or drawn, I do think both of those are certainly well done though, it is because it is fun. I mean unlike the 616 X-Men books there is no real depressing feeling to it despite the situation the X-Men has found themselves, we all know the X-Men will always make it through and here it doesn't try to bluff you into believing otherwise. It is a little disheartening that "fun" books are a rarity these days. I mean for example Spider-Man was a guest-star in the last two issues to good effect, he was well written here and made for fun reading, I hope he pops back up again. Then compare it the most recent Amazing Spider-Man, released the same week, were Spider-Man ripped off a woman's face.
Moving along besides the main plot which is building up nicely, I am enjoying the bits with Nick Fury and his new outfit. I would love it if somewhere down the line Nick starts up a mixed human/mutant task force since the "X-SHIELD" jumpsuits are just asking for that, plus it would be a great way to get Forge back into the picture. But what I like best about this Fury is that reminds me of the Fury from the 90's animated Spider-Man, which I have always liked. Other bits I like are the hints that both Warren and Betsy will be showing up more in the future. And with Betsy we will probably get a Mojo story too if only so Claremont can nail down what Spiral actually did to her in this universe.
Anyway I suggest that if you like the older style of comics or just want an antidote to the grim and grit of the current crop of stories check out X-Men Forever 2. It is fun over the top book that while familiar is more than likely going to end up offering some interesting surprises this year.
