Why the Re-cast on Decade?

I don't mind the recasting at all since the purpose of Decade is to celebrate the Riders not the actors that portray them

And by Riders, it doesn't just mean the masks. It means the men behind them as well. The way things are going all Decade seems to be doing is celebrating the costumes and not the characters that wore them.

I'm still hoping the original nine appear in the movie.

I definitely wouldn't go that far. I think that line of thinking is way too unfair. Part of the character itself, the makeup of who it is relies too much on the actor that played them and how they portrayed them on screen.

There really wouldn't be a rider to celebrate or remember without that actor that played them.

With the recasts, it's more like a celebration of cosplayers. Anyone can wear the suits but it's just not the same. As long as there is a nice explanation I really don't mind too much.

I agree with both of you. I'm haven't seen a lot of Kamen Riders, but this recating still bothers me. If the Riders never appeared out of their suits like the original Kamen Rider team-ups, it be okay. But recasting and having it be obvious to those who've seen the originals (ie. unhenshined) is just terrible. I hate recasting with a passion. It was the one thing from The Dark Knight that bothered me (Maggie replacing Katie). If Toei does go with the other Riders being from an alternative universe, that may work. However, it's still a shame that several of the actors who made their characters the heroes we and Japanese children love aren't going to return for one more adventure. Hopefullly, they do appear in the movie, as the Riders from Decade's universe.

Yeah about that :redface2:

That said, I think the Decade recasting is more of a conscious decision on Toei's part, with how they're doing the story and the remixed worlds. I still hope they give the original guys a chance to return though, those that can/want to.

That would make sense also. Its already enough that this new series is using all of the other riders as part of the show. Bring back to older actors would just take away more from Decade being its own show.

I think they are just trying to make Decade a show that is incorporating the previous riders and not trying to make a show by recycling the old ones and putting them together. (Although if it were the other way it would explain the design of his suit looking like they didnt take time on plan to making it look good :disappoin but its not that bad.)

Actors lost their looks/ wanted too much payment/ quit/ disappeared,
New boys work for peanuts

And the fact that the don't like working on shows like this. Some of those actors consider superhero roles to be an embarrassment. (I remember, for example, that Joe Odagiri did not like doing Kuuga.) Throughout the Heisei Rider Series, Toei has liberally casted "here-today-gone-tomorrow" idols, few of whom have any interest in the Masked Rider franchise. Just picked out for their looks.

When I saw the promo for Decade, to see what the big deal was, I noticed that someone else was playing Godai/Kuuga! It took GUTS for Toei to recast for a hero character, when in the past, that was very rare! (That character would often either be phased out or killed off, because a character was tailor-made for an actor, so they conceive a new character for a new actor.)

Tsuburaya Productions is very careful about the actors they choose for the Heisei Ultramen. Especially because of Hiroshi Nagano (which was not his fault, but his manager's). These guys have commitment.

I just hope that these new actors have that same commitment that most of their predecessors sorely lacked (regardless of how I feel about the Heisei Rider Series).

I agree. It's not about the actors, it's the entire franchise itself that Decade is celebrating people, Hello?!

Did no one even watch or paid any attention to the Decade conference meeting?!

Oh for God's sake...

Joe doesn't like toku as a genre, but he did more or less enjoy working on Kuuga.

Except he's not playing Godai Yuusuke, but Onodera Yuusuke. Different character, same costume.

What was wrong with Nagano?

I read that Joe Odagiri was kinda afraid that he would get "stereo-typed" or "cast-typed" as Kamen Rider Kuuga and not be able to get work in other shows,etc... Kinda like what happened to a lot of American child and sitcom actors.

Personally I think he did a great job playing Yūsuke Godai. He did say that he did have trouble playing the role sometimes.

But I do hope that they can get as much as the original actors as possible or someone similiar to them. Or even come up with an alternative story to explain why other people are these Riders now.
