Why in the hell did Ultraman Nexus fail?

Nexus is a fantastic show... but then, so is Max. What I love about Tsuburaya is that even after Nexus failed they still went on to do Ultra Seven X and I love that variety (that is, lighter, family-oriented shows like Max alongside more serious shows like Nexus). It's good to see they didn't totally give up after Nexus died.

Nexus was way too great a departure from the Ultraman formula. It was darker and way more soap operaesque. I appreciate that series for what it is, however it is one of my least favorite Ultra series.

Really fail does someone need to inform you that I finished Nexus, and I think it was incredible, and the soap operaesque is needed in any series.

See, I like other ultraman shows, but I think everything past Gaia has been complete crap. Especially the last two, they've effectively lost the ability to tell a good story, or have good hosts for their ultras (and mostly not even have good defence force characters, although there are some that were cool) and have turned it into a waste. Max was HORRIBLE to me, and Mebius wasn't much better *although the movie I thoroughly enjoyed* Nexus was the exception in that timeframe. After seeing it, I thought I could expect good things to come. The last four series (counting 7X and the Ultra Battle) have been such disapointments.

Are you kidding me? Mebius was incredible and Galaxy was just so damn fun.

Nexus and the N Project is a great alternate take on Ultraman, and The Next is in my top five favorite films. Ever. Nexus is what made me like Ultraman. I'd love to see another series that takes such an interesting spin on things.

Max is a fantastic anthology series and the decision to bring in so many fantastic directors (Kaneko, Miike, Jissoji, etc.) is one that deserves lots of applause. A great homage series that still manages to stay pretty fresh and it's awesome seeing an Ultraman that doesn't rely on form changes so much. Blasted form-changes get annoying after awhile. This would probably be my favorite Ultra series and is the show that made me *love* Ultraman.

Moebius is a lot of fun and I love the production design but it does drag a bit in the middle and suffers from a bit too much "been-there-done-that" at times. I love it, but it's not my favorite. Personally, if they'd kept the same sort of feeling the Bogal arc had, it would've been a much better show. Not sure how else to explain that.

Ultra Seven X is great. Definitely an Ultra Seven series and not an Ultraman series, if that makes sense. Heh. The ending theme is pretty revolting and while I can see the arguments that maybe it tries too hard to be "dark" and "edgy," I think it succeeds well at being sci-fi in the mold of Philip K. Dick.

Ultra Galaxy is obviously a very budgeted show but still manages to be a ton of fun and have an intriguing story to boot. Great to see so many kaiju in one series, even if some were just cameos. I just hope the rumored second series ups the production values a bit.

That's five series since and including series and a good bit of variety from all. Personally, despite its imperfections, I love the current era of Ultra series (that is, Ultra Q Dark Fantasy-onwards) and I have high hopes for TYO's first series. I'd love to see a show that combines story and drama like Nexus had with the fun and excellent production values a la Max. That's what I was hoping Moebius would be and it was until the initial Bogal arc ended. After that it often seemed to forget where it was going, wherever that was. Alas.

Are you kidding? Ultra Seven was horrific. It was vapid, with a convoluted story and wooden performances.
