Who else thinks the majority of Super Sentai is crap?!

The whole idea that "Oh it's just a silly kids' show, so we don't have to put in any real effort". I see it in many fans and sometimes it feels like the writers themselves possess that attitude. Just shoehorn in the merchandise quota, go through the motions, call it a day. Can you say, for example, that Sentais like Hurri, Bouken, Go-On or Shinken really made the most of their potential? Rider like Kabuto, Den-O and Decade (maybe even Kiva)? I can't say they did. Instead they were content to do the minimum and let the toys do the rest.

Ehhh....most series don't make the absolute most of their potential though.

You.... just called someone a tool because they're opinion is different than you and complained about that problem in the same paragraph.....

No...you're free to like whatever series you want. If you like Metal Hero? Awesome. If you like Sentai? Great. If you like Godzilla? Have at it, sir.

To me, you are fully welcome to watch and love whatever you like. You are NOT welcome, however, to berate my (or someone else's) tastes because they don't synch up with yours.

I don't mean to start fights guys. Honestly. I'm just very opinionated. As we all are, since we joined a forum. Nobody should take these responses seriously. Nobody. As I always say, none of you or I had anything to do with the production or development with these shows, thus we shouldn't take it as a personal attack. Am I right? :) And by the way, I knew this thread would create tension. Quite fun. But the personal jabs are immature.

You didn't reply, but mainly just posted.. we're wrong and that was it.

Could you give some examples of what you're speaking of?

Here. . .

In all honesty, Ultraman is the franchise that is most cookie-cutter and is loyal to that concept. I'm oversimplifying here, but this is what is boils down to: You have the Ultra - whatever s/he may be and from wherever. They are in a grey or red or blue suit. They 're supported by some fighting team - usually militaristic/govt in some form. When they run out of time and power, the light blinks. But from the Ultra series I've seen, Max, Nexus, Tiga, Cosmo, and I can't remember the other one - the one before Cosmo..DYNA, the characters and plots are all different.

First off, you should say "I think Ultraman is the franchise that is most cookie-cutter" because you're opinion , not fact, is very biased.

Here is my oversimplification of SS. A team gets some stones or devices turns into the same color suits in every series and fights monsters that aren't very original, sometimes have ships too. Wow. You're right. Ultraman is really outdone by SS

You are NOT welcome, however, to berate my (or someone else's) tastes because they don't synch up with yours.

Who are you referring to? No one personally attacked you.

Well, I think all toku that follows some sort of schedule as far as frequency of series is going to need to follow some sort of formula in order to keep up the work. Writers and designers only have so much time to come up with concepts for the next show. So, I find it more appealing when, even within those confines, they can still make something that is different from recent years and can carve its own path. I am studying to be an architect and usually when we get design programs, I find it more challenging to be more creative when you are given some sort of limits as far as time and design goes because you are forced to find way to make your concept as unique as possible within those constraints. If you are given unlimited time as well as creativity, sure you can create something pretty epic, but its a lot easier to do so in that scenario. So, I see the "cookie-cutter" way of doing things as a way to not only be able to efficiently bust out content on a regular basis, but as also a way to show the creativity of the production staff. And I think that all 3 toku series mentioned have been able to do that to some degree over the years. Whether fans like what is being produced is up to the individual fans.

Oddly , that seems to follow suit with sentai fans. >_> Sorry, something I notice all too often, say something of an opposing viewpoint or opinion etc etc and they act like you just killed their mother. ...Case in point, the thread title is "Who else thinks super sentai is crap" , yet those who LIKE it obviously feel the NEED to come into the thread to defend their beloved. To me , the title reads more for people who DON'T like it. But that's me

That was the best answer and most unbiased response I've heard. I applaude you. Truly :buttrock:

By the way, I've never made a thread that was this popular so fast.

Don't SS fans seem that way? I agree, it seems so.

Super Sentai is good sometimes and bad sometimes.

So is Ultraman. So is KR. So is pretty much any long-running franchise.

Being hung up on what people think of whatever you like is stupid. Just like it, share it, talk about it.

If people can't get into it, their loss.

Well said, except for the "their loss" part hehe. If you don't like it, it's not a loss. It's a gain. You're not wasting time/etc on something you don't like :loltongue:

LOL. You started out by saying, on a forum filled with Super Sentai fans, that SS is crap. You thought you wouldn't attract ANY ire at all?

Here is my oversimplification of SS. A team gets some stones or devices turns into the same color suits in every series and fights monsters that aren't very original, sometimes have ships too. Wow. You're right. Ultraman is really outdone by SS

Toku likes its color-coding.

Who are you referring to? No one personally attacked you.

Who said anyone attacked me, specifically? You always use yourself as an example first. But you start a thread up to say SS is crap, then when people defend the shows (not allowed, apparently), you say they're stubborn for not agreeing with you.

Not to be the boss of How to Make a Thread (someone'll have a crack about this), but...If you don't want any discussion, you should label the thread, "Sentai Hate Thread" and then somewhere in your post, nowhere specific, say, "I don't want any discussion on the subject--this is just for people who hate Sentai". Then I, and anyone with sense, will know not to bother with it, if they're a fan of Sentai.

Otherwise you're inviting people to defend something they love, and why, pray tell, is that wrong? I'm CLEARLY missing something here.

So... you dislike tokusatsu?

Huh? Where'd you get that idea? I'm a HUGE Godzilla and Ultraman fan, in addition to several other shows and movies outside of the major franchises and I even like the occasional Sentai (Gekiranger) or Rider (Faiz) series. I don't see how you got the idea that I dislike the genre in any way.

:eyebrow:

It's all personal preference. People will overlook similarities in franchises they enjoy. But in the end, they're all franchises and as such have common themes and motifs that stretch from one series to another.

You may not find Ultra Series the same, but that's because you're attuned to Ultra Series. Same with a hardcore Sentai watcher. This attunement even extends into certain franchises themselves, like Showa vs Heisei Kamen Riders, or UC vs. AU Gundams.

It's a form of cognitive dissonance. People will unknowingly begin justifying even the smallest decisions after the fact. Examples:

In Festinger and Carlsmith's classic 1959 experiment, students were asked to spend an hour on boring and tedious tasks (e.g. turning pegs a quarter turn, over and over again). The tasks were designed to generate a strong, negative attitude. Once the subjects had done this, the experimenters asked some of them to do a simple favour.

They were asked to talk to another subject (actually an actor) and persuade them that the tasks were interesting and engaging. Some participants were paid $20 (inflation adjusted to 2009, this equates to $148.40) for this favor, another group was paid $1 (or $7.42 in '2009 dollars'), and a control group was not asked to perform the favour.
When asked to rate the boring tasks at the conclusion of the study (not in the presence of the other "subject"), those in the $1 group rated them more positively than those in the $20 and control groups. This was explained by Festinger and Carlsmith as evidence for cognitive dissonance. The researchers theorized that people experienced dissonance between the conflicting cognitions, "I told someone that the task was interesting", and "I actually found it boring." When paid only $1, students were forced to internalize the attitude they were induced to express, because they had no other justification. Those in the $20 condition, however, had an obvious external justification for their behaviour, and thus experienced less dissonance.

In subsequent experiments, an alternative method of "inducing dissonance" has become common. In this research, experimenters use counter-attitudinal essay-writing, in which people are paid varying amounts of money (e.g. one or ten dollars) for writing essays expressing opinions contrary to their own. People paid only a small amount of money have less justification for their inconsistency and tend to experience more dissonance.

In a different type of experiment conducted by Jack Brehm, 225 female students rated a series of common appliances and were then allowed to choose one of two appliances to take home as a gift. A second round of ratings showed that the participants increased their ratings of the item they chose, and lowered their ratings of the rejected item. This can be explained in terms of cognitive dissonance. When making a difficult decision, there are always aspects of the rejected choice that one finds appealing and these features are dissonant with choosing something else. In other words, the cognition, "I chose X" is dissonant with the cognition, "There are some things I like about Y." More recent research has found similar results in four-year-old children and capuchin monkeys.

You get the idea.

This has nothing to do with the merits or each show, but it's probably why you get Sentai folks and Ultraman folks and whatnot.
