Whats a good epic anime I can get into?

Evangelion fans don't come much harder core than myself, and I've no problems with people not liking it. In fact, I'm continually amazed it's achieved any real popularity outside of Japan. It's a commentary on franchises Americans don't watch, family issues Americans don't have, and criticizes a religion that roughly 5% of Americans believe in.

Then I thank you. You are the ONLY Eva fan I have ever talked to that doesn't act like MMPR or any other number of fans if you even say one bad word about Eva.

How about you stop riding his dick and let him make his own opinion? I want to know KingRanger's reasons since he actually seems to have watched Evangelion and Claymore. In the future you should stay out of conversations on shows that you haven't seen.

Not that I need to justify my dislike of eva to you, but I don't like much about it. I don't like the mecha designs. The only character I liked was Misato, and how she went out was lame. The music is ok I guess, but I have heard better. The main character just did nothing for me. And right about the time he started to get interesting, well we all know how the over all story ended. There is more, but I really don't feel the need to get into it with you.

EDIT: Also, Macross totally kicks ass. Anyone interested in mecha anime should watch it and just pretend like the animation has aged better than it actually did. Then watch Do You Remember Love? and laugh at the first time a mecha production company came up with a wacky rationalization for retelling the same story in different ways!

Macross in it's original form is an epic masterpiece. I loved every thing about it. IMO even the animation is top notch even by today's standards.

Evangelion is one of those shows that hit at the right time to be a lot of people's "first" exposure to "real" Anime. As a result, you tend to get a lot of people who defend it with the rabidness of a nostalgic first love.

Of course, it also gets a lot of backlash as a result of its popularity. This can lead to situations where it's hard to tell if someone legitimately dislikes it (for whatever reason) or is only a poser trying to act like they're the "cool kid".

Personally, I still like it, if for completely different reasons now than when I first saw it years ago.

I tried to like Eva. I have watched the regular series a couple times. I thought the first time through was just me being in a bad mood. The second time through I just realized it wasn't for me. There was a show that struck me as having some similarities to eva, RahXephon. I really enjoyed Rahxephon. Not sure why.

This is an open forum discussion, and I'm free to post in whatever topic I so choose THANK YOU VERY MUCH. And I highly doubt that reading the article you posted would change how King Ranger feels on EVA.

It wouldn't. I don't base what I like or dislike on things like that.

It's a Sartre novel with giant robots, you'd have to be incredibly naive to think most people would like that. Most people don't even like Sartre novels! Evangelion is on the whole too populist for Americans to take seriously as intellectual viewing, and far too morosely intellectual for someone who watches anime purely for entertainment.

I don't like the mecha designs.

I didn't either, myself, but there's a story justification for why the robots look so unusual that is quite interesting. In Japan, people liked the designs just because it was the first genuinely new aesthetic in mechanical design to appear in over a decade.

It's hard to appreciate their impact in retrospect, because right now anime is going through an incredible Renaissance period of creative and unique mechanical design. This was inspired in large part by Evangelion proving that you could get a big hit out of trying something different.

I will say that if you disliked Evangelion you may care to watch Vision of Escaflowne if you haven't before. It came out at around the same time and tackled remarkably similar themes, though in a less harsh and more optimistic fashion.

Its characters are also much more likable people. Evangelion protagonists are generally defined by how they fail and what makes them a terrible person. Escaflowne characters are defined by what they're trying to achieve, even if they don't quite reach their goal.

EDIT: Regarding Macross, the design work is still a triumphant achievement of originality and engineering. The Valkyrie is one of the most beautiful pieces of mechanical design ever created. Macross's character designs superbly blend basic principles of cartooning with the needs of storytelling. People look like their personalities, but not too much.

The actual animation... ahhh, it just wasn't a good-looking series, even given the time. Its budget was clearly poorer than what, say, Sunrise could've raised at that point. There are a lot of animation errors, off-model key frames, and unsightly coloring mistakes you wouldn't encounter in modern anime. Forgive that, though, and you will enjoy a caliber of writing that puts most modern mecha shows to shame.

I have Escaflowne I might have to watch it. Also let me say something I forgot about Eva. As much as I don't care or it, I would watch it over any of the numerous crappy fanservice animes of the last couple of years. I am so fed up with anime now a days.

I can't recommend Escaflowne enough...the movie has a very different feel from the series, but the movie itself is a separate story...a lot of it is different the tone is more serious and dark, for example.

Votoms is another good classic. I think Sunrise did that one too. And Captain Harlock. But if you want something more recent, the first 60 episodes or so of Rurouni Kenshin are pretty amazing.

I say this a lot, but I stand firmly by the assertion that nobody's ever made a better mecha show than VOTOMS. There have been a lot of shows that come close or are just as good, but never better.

There is a lot of good anime airing this season (probably the best season personally so far as it seems there is something for everyone) such as Angel Beats, Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei, Senkou no Night Raid and Arakawa Under the Bridge. Heck, even B Gata H Kei has ended up as not the fanservice generic crud I thought it was and is actually kind of funny.

But I really gotta recommend Durarara!! It is too awesome for words. It's not even something I can describe well. You'd have to see it for yourself.

(Also, yes, we need more Macross)
