Heck, I myself defend like 19 different seasons cause I love them all so much (Change and Magi being a couple of them).

Exactly. We defend shows we love. I think it's human nature. But it's a bit hypocritical for Shougo to be critical of say the hesei stuff, but brush off another persons feelings as "nitpicking" when it comes to a show he likes.

Are you joking? You do nothing but "nitpick, as you put it, pretty much every show post 1999. I agree that some of these complaints about changeman are stupid, but hey.. I love the show. The people saying them can say what ever they want. But YOU of all people brushing aside people's complaints as "nitpicking" with your track record of doing exactly the same with numerous other shows... It's ironic to say the least.\



He knows all that. You are just "nitpicking" one of HIS favorite shows. If it were one of the shows he "nitpicks" it would be a different story.

To be honest, I think we should just drop it for now. Nothing can come out of this, except a gigantic shitstorm.

I love Changeman and I really don't want to see that happen to a thread about it.

As far as I'm concerned it's more than alright that Magiranger's my favorite. :laugh::laugh:

Okay, in all seriousness though, I am going to insist that people not take potshots at each other in this thread; we just had what could have been a great Magi thread get dragged down through the gutter because one person had to ruin things for everyone, and I don't want that repeated over here.

Are you kidding me? Making fun of the special-effects of a low-budget show from 1985? Grasping at straws, man.

I've been watching shows that came out before 1985 such as Bioman and Shaider, and their special effects looked much better on-screen than Changeman. But since it was pointed out that Changeman has completely different filming locations, maybe that's where the budget went?

Spoiler alert: Ibuki goes lunatic in the first episode for a reason, and it's something they go back to in one of the episodes in the 30s...it's not "glossed over" at all.

If you bother sticking with the show, you find out why he was completely justified in doing that.

So one must go through over 30 episodes just for that? Sorry, but that's just not my cup of tea.

Regarding the Earth Force: maybe the Greek myths weren't myths at all, but factual accounts of ancient and mystical beasts like the phoenix, mermaid, dragon, griffin, pegasus. Maybe they were Earth's oldest beasts. Maybe tapping into their primeval power -- even symbolically -- helps defend the EARTH from alien threats.

I wished they explained that in the first two episodes instead of forcing viewers to find that out in a double-digit episode.

People always bring this up like it's valid -- what's wrong with them? He's trying to save the girl's pet. Kids kiss adults for helping them all the time. Furthermore, that episode is supposed to be funny from the other four's point of view -- really, Hayate is blowing off patrolling to look for a cat just to impress some girl? (They don't know it's a little girl, and just think it's the typical behavior of womanizer Hayate. This episode is meant to show there's more to than Hayate than meets the eye.)

I don't know... maybe I should rewatch the first four episodes to understand that context. The horrid pacing of the first two episodes pissed me off to the point that I didn't bother to comprehend any sense of character development that started afterwards.

And as for Tsurugi in his baseball outfit...really? In all of the goofy stuff you've seen in tokusatsu, THAT is something to get stuck on? Geez Louise! The whole baseball thing was written in because Tsurugi's actor was a star player in high-school, and the character puts on the uniform as a little confidence builder. What's so wrong with that?

I haven't seen that episode (not that I would, anyway), but it sure doesn't sound goofy at all. Was his baseball background explained before or after Tsurugi put on that outfit?

So many of these complaints are just minor nitpicks -- I think you guys are looking too hard to find something wrong with the show.

I didn't have to look hard. I just saw how convoluted episode 1 was and then tried to figure out WTF was going on by continuing until episode 4. As I said earlier, I just gave up because the whole show just ended up being uninteresting. Admit it - we all have that one Super Sentai show we don't like (whether it's Battle Fever J, Zyuranger, Boukenger, Go-onger or Goseiger). I just ended up not liking Changeman due to its presentation.

Personally, I prefer robos to at least look like they combined out of separate vehicles rather than a CGI hot mess like [insert robo from any Heisei sentai].

I agree, but I prefer the separate vehicles to not obviously look like robo parts. They could've thought of a better way to fold Change Robo's arms in Heli Change II (like the Volt Bomber in Voltes V).

BTW, why do they bother having a shield if it's only big enough to cover their fists?

I'd like to say Changeman's suit designs are very nice. Actually the best word I can use to describe them is "mature", for some reason. I love the mythological creatures in Sentai, and Changeman gave them a tech feel; But at the same time the powers weren't exactly tech at all, they were organic if you will because they came from the earth.

Speaking of that, the fact that the Earth itself (think about it, the whole damn thing..from Africa to freakin NY, From NY to Cuba, etc.) every blade of grass, the soil, all the living things down to the very core gave these 5 humans such a power is amazing.

It's essentially like a Spirit Bomb from DBZ materialized into suits.

Expressed that way, the Earth Power is pretty impressive. And, given the effects available at the time and budget, I do like the big Earth Power attacks that they'll pull off every so often; I just use my imagination a little to turn two-dimensional images on a screen into big three-dimensional mythological monsters tearing mooks apart. Its fun.
