This looks neat, I should watch it!" and then they'll watch it. If that demographic isn't watching television when the show that's aimed at them isn't airing, they won't watch it, losing that segment of potential ratings.

Your primary argument makes no sense though. You seem to be positing that since Nexus failed and since it had darker elements than your usual tokusatsu series, it surely must have failed because of those elements, not because those elements were out of place for the given time-slot, which is why it ACTUALLY failed. Nexus did well enough in a late-night slot to justify Seven X, another serious take on the franchise, which also did reasonably well in that slot, if I remember correctly.

And did you ever actually watch Nexus? I mean, yeah, it has some pretty dark moments but it's rather tame compared to some pretty popular anime out there and it ultimately stands up for the classic Ultraman morals throughout its run.

It definitely feels like, whenever someone tries to point at Nexus as a "dark" or "super serious" Ultraman series, they seem to actively try to ignore the fact that it's still, at its heart, about Light conquering Darkness, and only focus on the shock value inherent in what's normally a children's show tackling some harsher situations and being more character-focused. Also, DUR MORE PEOPLE DIE THAT MEANS IT'S DAAAAARRRRRRK.

Yeah, the way I see it, Nexus fits in pretty well with the rest of Ultra Series. At first it looks rather different, but deep down, it's an Ultraman show. I mean, it's got the whole "hope is the greatest power" thing.
