No. You can't translate puns. You either know them or you don't. You also can't translate something if you can't make heads or tails of it in another language.

Translating does not always mean LITERAL. That is part of the problem with A LOT of fansubbing groups. Pro translators have to find things in their native language that would work in place of the language they are translating from. And if you can't make heard or tails of something, then you shouldn't be translating in the first place.

...And most of the targeted audience couldn't give a rat's ass about puns or cultural references from a country they know next to nothing about or understand unless they're otaku or weaboos or they just take this **** way too seriously.It's like how Gold Ranger's helmet and staff contained the kanji for king on it a pun on his name KingRanger kids didn't care they just thought it was a cool symbol we didn't even know that until the internet boon.Like kids wont care about the haiku and kanji in PRS if they're in it* for the record I hate name changes in dubs but I just accept it because I can't change it and the fact is most dubs like that are targeted towards kids not me personally so it's either suck it up or watch it fansubbed and to be honest I much prefer to watch it legally*

Let's face it, the 4kids duded version of Dragonball kai is an abomination.

the sheer amount of Culture references in Lucky star make no sense to 90% of western anime fandom

When Konata tells the story of how she saved Tsukasa from an evil foreigner, the video of her beating up the foreigner shows her using the Tatsumi Senpuu Kyaku (Ryu and Ken's special move) on a Foreigner who looks like Street Fighter 2's Guile in Ryu's Japan Stage from the same game. Also the Street Fighter 2 Interface is used for this scene as well.

he two-handed heart gesture the girls made during the OP dance is a signature move for Morning Musume, requently made by two of the "cute" members, Michishige Sayumi and Kusumi Koharu. The gesture is also part of Kusumi Koharu's PV dance for "Balalaika", the OP of the extremely popular young girl's anime, "Kirarin Revolution".

You're actually implying that people won't recognize a Street Fighter reference? You probably should have picked something else.

Your entire argument is still pointless. Some dubbed anime actually have special subtitles for signs and such. Besides that, official subs would not point out and explain any of those references. That is not what subtitles are for. Only fansubbers do that crap, and it's really fucking annoying.

Why is it that English speakers have such an issue with dubs when practically EVERY OTHER CULTURE IN THE WORLD (INCLUDING JAPAN) has no problem with them?
