I can't help myself, I just loved this movie!
[HIDE] Maybe it helps that I'm not much of a Marvel fan and haven't read any Thor comics (so I came in with no expectations) but this move just blew me away! I love Norse mythology and what they did with it was pretty interesting. It's rare for me to see a movie and think "Damn, that CGI looked good!" but Asgard was simply stunning. All the characters rocked though Loki really stole the show. Of course seeing Thor finally grow was great (though through the Power of Love? Meh...) but watching Loki's character arc throughout the movie was infinitely more fun, though that may be because I love trickster types.
Did Marvel learn from Iron Man 2 to dial it back a little for this movie? Despite SHIELD being all over the place, they felt like they needed to be there and their presence never felt like an advertisement for The Avengers. [/HIDE]
Your feelings are basically the same as mine.
[hide]I don't know a lot about the comics (outside of what I've gotten from A:EMH) but for a fan of Norse Mythology it's pretty effing sweet.
Asgard was freaking gorgeous, and amazing, possibly the most visually stunning world I've seen in a movie. It was also a splendid use of setting to build character; the fact that you get such a tangible feel for the sort of place Asgard is makes Thor's alienation and confusion when he comes to "Midgard" feel a lot more tangible.
I have to wonder if a person coming in knowing nothing about the comics or the mythology would be pretty lost, though. (I heard a guy in the seat next to me ask, at one point, "what's that guy's name again? Yokel?" [later] "Oh, Loki.")
Thor's redemption was really well-done, and I was a little annoyed by how much they overstated the role that love played in it. I mean, love was clearly a factor, but in practice it was not the only factor and didn't deserve to be played that way. But I can forgive a movie for doing a stupid 'tell,' so long as it gets the 'show' part right.
I was also really worried that the movie was going to have a lot of advertising for Avengers, but I was pleasantly surprised. The stuff that was in there felt organic to the movie they made. SHIELD could have basically been any shady government organization, but if you have seen the other movies and know what their deal is, it just gives it another level. Well done.
Anyway I think I'm gonna have to spend a day or two trying to mentally unpack Loki's various lies and motivations. Very complex character, but I need to figure out whether he holds up or not.[/hide]
