I'm not really concerned about the gender thing. I'm more concerned that they let their children choose everything, no matter the consequences.

The parents seem to have managed that well enough. They live outside mainstream society and don't give a damn about fitting in with others or encouraging their children to fit in.

They're still actually part of mainstream society. They still live amongst other people and buy whatever they need.
The way I see it, they aren't dealing with this realistically. Yes, it's important to let your children be individuals, but not to this extent. Not yet anyway.
