*~*~*SAUCE*~*~*

A Toronto couple are currently refusing to disclose the gender of their 4 month old named "Storm"

The reason?

The couple (after reading "X: A Fabulous Child's Story") hopes that Storm can become the catalyst for a progressive alteration in how different genders are viewed by the public and the media (woman's place is a home, man's place is at work, etc.)

As of right now only 6 people know the baby's true gender

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at some of the hysterical reactions to this story that I've seen on the web. People go bugnut insane when suddenly they're denied the chance to force stereotypes onto someone. "It's EVIL!" "It's ABUSIVE!" I'm not saying that bringing up a child like this is necessarily advisable, but it's got to be better than the standard "pink for a girl, blue for a boy" thing

As for the argument about "socialisation" and "the child will never fit in," the parents are hippies/communists who live a proudly non-mainstream lifestyle. It's not like the kid would have had a "normal" childhood anyway

I agree I think it's a boy. Maybe it's because the other one is a boy but he has pigtail braids and the family secretly wants a girl? So they used this excuse?

Though all in all, I don't give a crap. I just hope the kid doesn't grow up with identity issues.

Why does it matter, though? Why do you instantly feel the need to go "THIS CHILD IS A BOY!"

Oh those parents are crazy. People shouldn't use their children to make a point.

Heh. This thread is just now LC's rant thread.

No it's not. I'm not even sure it's a good idea. It sounds good, yeah, but how long can they really keep it up?

There was a Swedish couple a few years ago who tried the same thing: http://jonathanturley.org/2009/07/03/its-pop-swedish-parents-raise-genderless-child/ I've tried to find something more up-to-date on the case but can't. This one would still only be like 2-3 years old and not at school, so ... who knows how it worked out?
