Super Sentai Grunts: Were they ever useful?

I think grunts are there to make the heroes look good, like Gokaigers doing their weapon swaps in the first episode (which won't be possible against just one villain). And like the Stormtroopers, it can make the enemies look like they are outnumbering the heroes instead of the other way around. I think grunts are essential for Super Sentai even if they are cannon fodders.

See, it works both ways though. People wouldn't like it if they saw the main character getting beaten up by the footsoilders.

They only time they really seem useful is when the hero can't for whatever reason use their powers.

You also see grunts harassing civilians and whatnot pretty regularly. Having them there adds credibility to the idea that these organizations have actual world-conquest goals and aren't just throwing monsters at the planet for the sake of beating the heroes.

I want to see the grunts/foot soldiers get together and turn into a giant monster like that one episode of Megaranger.

The Jinma soldiers in Liveman were not that useless. I thought it was pretty cool to have a group of foot soldiers that could still fight even if all their limbs were cut off. Then came the second variant, which could also take on human disguises.
In fact, I think Liveman is one of the few Sentai shows, where the heroes actually got beaten up by the grunts in their debut (while transformed).

I also thought that the Barlo Soldiers in Ohranger were pretty good. It was more than often that you saw them do their little eye-blast thing, which knocked the heroes over.

So there has been some exceptions

Gaoranger also got their asses kicked by the grunts in the VS Super Sentai movie.

Thats mainly because the grunts powered up ... the same could be said when the grunts easily took out Ohranger in the Ohranger VS Kakuranger

grunts were much more useful in the past. they would often disguise themselves as humans and carry out secret missions to avoid suspicion. nowadays, they're just there for the heroes to beat up and show off their badassery.

The grunt's boss need them to prolong their life.
