Why would a star trek sequel "already being planned'"? Don't these types of movie gets popped out every 2 years or so?

Kinda wanted to watch the previous movie, but I'm not too interested in Star Trek.

You should definitely check it out, because I think JJ Abrams (who directed the new Star Trek and is known for his work in LOST, MI3, and Cloverfield) really made the universe accessible to people who are unfamiliar with Star Trek. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by how good it is.

I don't really get those complaints, other Trek movies have been just as action focused, those just didn't do them as well or have the same budget/talent behind them. The bigger problem with the movie was the utter lack of science or anything that made any kind of sense. The whole red matter thing was complete nonsense and Nero's motivations and plans are utterly absent, only explained in the novel.. which doesn't make for a very good villain.

Hopefully the second one does have a bit more focus and less action though. The rumour that they're not going with a big bad guy, but more of an obstacle they have to figure out (like the whale probe in IV) gives me hope. More character development and less lasers wouldn't be a bad thing.

The thing with the other movies is that they're still with the TV show and make (somewhat) sense with it. The reboot to me feels like "Let's reboot Star Trek and make it sleek and hip for the kids" Me being one of those "kids", still prefers the older stuff.

Which is why they still had it in-line with the original series by making it an alternative timeline of the original series by plot. I might be biased being a JJ Abrams fan, but at least JJ Abrams gave a new flavor to an otherwise a bit boring franchise (sorry Trekkies).

Being a Star Wars fan too, I don't see how JJ's version of Star Trek resembles it in any way...

You should change the title to Star Trek Into Darkness since it was confirmed by Abrams himself and Simon Pegg.
