Sentai sales figures since 1991

Fiveman is essentially a "Best of Hirohisa Soda" (the head writer from Google V to Fiveman), a collection of plots from all his other shows. He was burned out at that point. Not to say it's a bad show; it's certainly more watchable than something like Kyoryuger or Ninninger. But it's not exactly a contender for "the best".

Agreed.

By the way, am I the only one who somewhat liked the Fiveman puppets?

You mean these?

They were so cute!

Somewhere out there, I think I heard Lynxara's spine exploding out of her body.

NOTE: I haven't seen Fiveman, but it sounds like the puppets were a bit of an act of desperation on Toei's part to draw in kids who had simply stopped watching.

What happened to her? She hasn't posted anything here for months.

I don't doubt they were a last-minute addition, assuming that's true. (I could only wish that Ohranger's change of tone was that mild.) I do think they overstayed their welcome at times, but overall they were cute and fun.

Fiveman's honestly a reverse Kakuranger: serious first half, weird second half. Yet it worked much better in Kaku.

Fiveman was weird all around, it just seemed serious-ish at first.

They are just commentators outside of their first appearance.

Just as an update to this, I've just checked Bandai Japan's financial highlights report for the last completed financial year, and also calculated the average of the episode ratings listed in TV Nihon's wiki page for Ninninger.

Ninninger's total sales were ¥7.8 billion (yes, it just beat Gekiranger in the end and so is not "the worst selling season since Timeranger"). It's average viewership rating was 3.9%, the same as Kyoryuger and a slight improvement over ToQger.

Just for a little bit of context, the same Bandai report listed that Kamen Rider (roughly the last half of Drive and first half of Ghost) had sales of ¥15.7 billion, but Ultraman only had sales of ¥2.7 billion.

Sentai from Jetman to Ninninger, ordered by merchandise sales, highest to lowest.
Oh, Kyoryu, Zyu, Hurri, Aba & Gokai (joint), Go-On, Car, Deka, Jet & ToQ (joint), Gao, Magi, Shinken, Bouken, Go-Bus, Ginga, Gosei, GoGoV, Kaku, Dai & Ninnin (joint), Geki, Mega, Time.

Please note that where two or more shows are listed as "joint", they had matching values and so I have put them in chronological order. We'll never get actual numbers to know what order they should be in.

Probably isn't fair to compare Ultraman to Kamen Rider or Super Sentai as its toyline only runs half a year compared to the other shows having a year long line.

Also, Zyuohger isn't doing fantastic. Bandai Namco has it forecast to make 9.0 billion yen by the end of its run, which isn't great for an anniversary series. On top of that, forecast predictions actually tend to drop as we closer to the end of the year. Zyuohger's first half was expected to make 5.0 billion yen but only ended up with 4.6 billion yen. This means it probably had a really low first quarter. (Ninninger actually had the same first half sales)

I'm thinking next year's Sentai toyline won't be as bright and colorful as the last two years. Both were marketed as "fun" shows and one of them outright failed while the other's not looking too hot.

Zyuohger's 1st quarter numbers is actually even bellow Ninninger's (3.0 vs 2.3). I don't get how they're expecting to turn things around afterwards. Although really, Zyuohger basically isn't an "anniversary" series. Slapping an anniversary logo on a standard show won't magically raise its numbers.
