Popular theory is that After NC ended, his site hits pretty much nosedived and had become almost toxic to the other contributors. (It was apparently one of the reasons Spoony left and i recall Linkara saying that now he his reviews get more hits on his personal site than TGWTG) This is supported by Channel awesome announcing that they are not going to do the yearly anniversary movies any more and more and more creators ribbing on the fact the site is dying.
It also seems that his new series, Demo reel, has had low viewing numbers and critical reception of it has been mixed at best.
But i can live with a Bi-monthly NC with no 10-years old cutoff.
Dude, bi-
weekly. Waaay more than six episodes per year!
Spoony's case was more complicated than that IIRC. Doug offered him a part in Demo Reel but Noah didn't want to move (and end his own show) in order to put all his eggs in one basket. He was never an employee of CA anyway it was more a traffic-sharing deal and he realised that only about 1% of his video hits were coming from TGWTG. So having ruled out strengthening his ties and realising he got more or less nothing from the current situation he decided to go his own way.
Personally I never "got" Demo Reel. I think the humour was quite similar to the humour in To Boldly Flee, which in my opinion was notable more for questioning the careers of the people in it than for it's jokes. I respected that Doug decided to call time on NC, and I still checked out the site as I actually really like a lot of the "mid-table" reviewers (Suede, Film Brain, Leon Thomas, Sci-fi Guy, Diamanda Hagan, JesuOtaku, Rap Critic, Welshy etc etc etc). But even as someone who doesn't participate on the forums or follow any of the reviewers on twitter, you got the impression that people were starting to do their own thing and look beyond the CA/TGWTG brands.
If you looked at the video of the Chez Apocalypse crew's (N-Chick, Nella, Todd etc) recent con panel they noted that CA was going in the direction of more original content creation and away from reviewing, which is what finally spurred them to get their own site out of development hell. I would suspect that both Linkara and Brad Jones get most of their traffic from their own sites too. So the ties between the heavy-hitters were starting to loosen, which could only hurt the site as the many smaller reviewers just don't pull in the punters.
The questions Doug raised in To Boldly Flee still stand though. What will happen with this whole reviewing thing? Is it a long-term business proposition, or just a fad that could collapse any time? Do they keep going until nobody cares, or do they quit while they're ahead? I'm sure a lot of people will insist that Doug is going back to NC for business reasons rather than for the love of it as his latest video implied. Which is fair enough; the guy's put all his time and money into building his own company. Hell, 99% of the TV I watch now is toku, and that's entirely based around selling toys to three year olds. I can't exactly complain if the intentions behind something I enjoy are not entirely "artistic".
In any case, roll on February!
