Rewatching 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer': Timeless or Just Nostalgic?

I recently started a rewatch of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and honestly, I'm torn. While I can’t deny that it paved the way for so many shows that followed and had some incredible moments, there are definitely parts that feel a bit dated.

The character development, especially for Buffy and Willow, has always been a standout for me, but some of the early monster-of-the-week episodes just drag sometimes. Also, the humor still hits, but the cultural references can feel off.

I want to hear what everyone else thinks! Is 'Buffy' a timeless masterpiece, or does it have too many flaws to hold up today? How do you feel about the balance of campiness and depth in the show? Were there specific moments or characters that really resonated with you? Let’s discuss!

I’ve been rewatching Buffy too and I still think it’s mostly timeless. The emotional core—Buffy dealing with loss, responsibility, growing up—still lands hard. Season 5 and 6 especially hold up because they don’t pull punches on depression and trauma. Yeah, some season 1 and 2 episodes feel slow and the effects look cheap now, but the writing and acting carry it. The campiness is part of the charm for me; it never pretends to be super serious even when it gets dark. Spike and Anya are still my favorites. Flaws exist, but they don’t ruin the whole thing.

Love Buffy, always will. Rewatched last month and laughed so much at the cheesy lines and outfits. But then “The Body” happened and I was wrecked again. That’s the magic—it can go from silly to devastating in one episode. The balance works because Joss knew when to lean into camp and when to drop it for raw moments. Characters like Dawn grew on me a lot more this time. Flaws? Sure, but every rewatch I find new things to appreciate.

Well, Buffy's story never really ended. If you guys read comics and books, you have no idea how strong she had become. That's why in Death Battle, she defeated Blade.
