Power Rangers Jungle Fury -- "Pushed to the Edge" [Talk Up!]

Yes, he ruins them by being there and making everyone hate him. In the subequent rage over his very existance, cities crumble and people die in the thousands

stupid Firefox has been crashing even with the updated version out...

-Camille looks reasonably attractive as a blonde, I believe Holly had dyed her hair before taking this role.
-Bike fight was an example of having to deal with marketing/Toy people.
-Interesting... Camille refers to JaroShi as both Jarod and Dai Shi during this episode. Particularly in moments in emotional distress. Could this be the first sign of Camille (and Jarod's) ultimate side switch for the finale? I hope so.
-Lily w/ da GIRLZ POWERZ and destroys the Crane (who sounds like Necrolai)
-More Flit!
-"hey what's that? I'm badly dubbed but it's not important".
-"Jellica" as in not "Ang-".
-Holly's henshin looks all right but there it does leave something to be desired. Maybe it's her eyes?
-Jellica vs. JaroShi.
-Oh and Camille with the final burn.
-Is it Lily/Theo or Casey/Lily? (Go for the latter!).
-I really do wonder what the hell is on some these pizzas the actors are eating. I mean tofu, yuck.

Most of this episode was NZ footage aside from the obvious Megazord fight sequences of course.

I think JF thus far has shown just how much of an improvement Disney has made not only over Saban but even over themselves. Thus JF hasn't suffered like MF did I thought, maybe because the cast is somewhat smaller (though MF still had the stronger villian group) but also because the characters seem more flawed I guess.

And this is why I've hoped for Disney to WAIT a bit longer before beginning production on a PR series. Let the Sentai finish or at least finish filming before they begin post. You give them a solid blueprint and background to operate from and I guarantee you they'll blow all but the most biased and critical viewers away.

Hey saiko, you should add 12:30am as the replay time for those who miss the 8:00pm showing. I just noticed I missed it, but it's coming on again.:buttrock:

"Pushed to the Edge"

Wow! There was a lot of really great stuff in this episode.

The idea of the villainess turning into a human is an old one, but it never seems to get old, and they practically always turn out to be good episodes. This one is no exception. I was surprised to see Holly as a blonde, since that was her look in MF, but she looked good nonetheless.

My only problem with the heroes and villains interacting like this is that I'm always asking "Why don't the baddies just walk in and blast them all?" I pushed that aside this time because the scene was actually really well done.

It's hard not to like Lily, as she is probably the most consistent of the three Ranger characters so far. Her optimistic, pleasant demeanor worked well against Camille's not-so-nice, "expect the worst out of people" mentality.

We skated right through the death of Cardin, didn't we? I mean, I kind of assumed that he would be the big threat for the episode, but he got wasted in two seconds. I would have liked someone to mention him again at some point, to at least pretend he's part of the story (like Jellica says he and BaiLai were her favorites or something). At least Lily got some good one-on-one action in with him. That finisher was really awesome.

However, the bike was not awesome. In fact, it's the one real eyesore in the episode. I think my biggest problem is that the bikes these days are never used as VEHICLES, which is what they are. They are only used as weapons, like a sword or a cannon. They're used to blow something up, and then they vanish. Hell, even when Will was travelling through the forest in PROO, he used his flying vehicle to fight enemies, and when he was finished killing the hell out of them, he started WALKING ON FOOT again. Whaaaat?!

Anyway, I didn't think I was going to like the new Overlord character that Camille wakes up, after being told she "needs a new boss" but it turned out that Jellica was really cool. I really think she has the best monster voice in the whole season thus far. I love her inflections and personality. She feels like a distinct character. Which is so rare from rubber-suited baddies.

I'm glad the reason Camille didn't kill Lily wasn't that she was completely doing a 180, and instead, it's just because she hadn't repaid her debt to her. I like the ambiguity of this. I mean, most of us expect her to turn good eventually, but the process of getting us there has to feel realistic, and so far, I'm not complaining.

And ya know what else... Flit was in a couple of scenes in this episode, and I actually liked them. "You look like a model. Eat something. Eat something!!" Seriously, that line cracked me up. See, this is how Flit should be normally. A character that appears and makes comment on the situation, but in a way that is helpful to the growth of the characters or progression of plot. When he's talking through my zord battles, I just wanna strangle the thing.

Speaking of progression, I think a lot of characters were moving forward (or backward) in this episode.

The moment where Dai Shi suddenly stops Jellica's attack on Lily was an "oh ****" moment for me. I like that it can be taken more than one way. You can root for him and Camille growing closer, but you could also just take it as Dai Shi wanting to take advantage of Jellica's power. Either way, I think the scene was beautifully handled.

This is another episode that breaks formula, and the Monster of the Day (or arc, as it were) is defeated early on, and the ensuing battles are all very open-ended, leaving no side feeling like they've completely won. Well, except Dai Shi, I guess. But Lily and Camille are still screwed.

And even so, the episode still manages to push through the inherent grimness and offer up a hopeful, and dare I say, heartwarming ending. It's probably the best epilogue scene to any episode in Jungle Fury.

Lily feels like crap for doing something what she felt was the right thing to do, by helping Camille, and it came back to bite her in the ass. But Theo offers words of encouragement, and... Now, I definitely feel like they're shipping Theo and Lily. And, SHOCK, I'm actually cool with this. The more I think about it, the more it seems to work for me. It feels natural, and real, and not at all forced. I just hope it doesn't just end here, or fizzle out, or have no sense of resolution by the time the show's over. Cuz that's why I was afraid of it being done in the first place...

The final moments were utterly classic and kind of amazing. I don't think it literally was, but it even sounded like the old MMPR instrumental "ending" music when the five of them were having pizza in the last shot. Just fantastic.

"Pushed to the Edge" wasn't perfect, but it was pretty damn good, by my standards. I couldn't bare to give this ep any lower than an A. I just had a blast with it.

Duly noted, Blazeking! Going to add that now!

Eh. You know.. I dont know about this one. So some points:

- I really enjoyed when the theme song cued in and Lily started kicking ass. The action felt much quicker and more intense. It was definitely more exciting during that period.

- I hope the toy sales are doing good because Power Rangers sure as hell isnt making money off the commercials. Bag Sealers and Plant Waterers?? Jeeze these are some boring ass commercials. Wheres the toy commercials and shizzle?

- So Jarrod finally shows a little something for Camille. For the first time he actually sticks up for her.

- I think this is the first time I've ever groaned at a Bike being called out. I could be wrong about that. I used to love the bikes of PR but they just arent as exciting as they were in the past.

The problem here is we've done this plot before. It was called "All About Beevil". And guess who wrote that episode? It was Jackie!

You would think that having prior experience to writing such an episode where the ranger is too trusting/caring while the villain takes advantage of that and burns the ranger at the end, would work out.

It just doesnt feel the same though.

In Ninja Storm's "All About Beevil", You had so much going on that focused on the character of Dustin and Marah. It wasn't just 6 minute fight fests. They actually wrote a plot in there that didnt involve fighting. Unbelievable, I know.

NS's episode was told in a slightly more comedic fare, though. But the real emotion behind the scenes was there. You felt terrible for Dustin by the end of the episode, just before things finally perked up for him.

In "Pushed to the Edge", I really didnt understand the "reveal" at all. Camille didnt take advantage of Lily at all. What the hell did she do?? All she did was crash into JKP and bitch and moan. Lily cheered her up and she was on her lil way.

She didnt backstab Lily, she didn't even take advantage of Lily. Yeah, Camille talked some **** at the end but what does Lily have to be upset about? Camille fucking saved the rangers TWICE in the damn episode? So what the **** does Lily have to be depressed about?

In "Beevil", Marah went to Dustin because she was going through some rejection. Dustin took her in and she decided, instead of being good, she would use Dustin to power up Beevil and become accepted by the peers that shunned her for her stupidity earlier. That's a real betrayal. Dustin was already running on a low tank of trust because of his motorcycle incident but despite every other rangers doubts, Dustin was convinced that Marah was sincere.

And he was betrayed. And we were treated to a very nice sunset battle between Dustin and Beevil. It wasnt as epic as it could of been thanks to Disney's excessive use of Stock Music tracks back in those days (ugh). But dammit, they tried. Jackie tried.

****, even the title was so clever. "All About Beevil". Not only does it refer to one part of the plot (the fact that Lothor and company are obsessing about Beevil) but it's a pun on the other part of the plot. ("All About Be Evil" / All About Being Evil) The fact Marah was rejected for not being evil enough and used Dustin's trust to get back on their good graces.

Here we have... Camille doesnt want to see Jarrod abused (which, we havent gotten too much of a reason why she gives a damn at this point. How many times has Jarrod threatened her life, himself? I want to know why she's desperately attached to him. She could have betrayed him and worked with the Snake monster. But she stayed on the side of Jarrod and got no thanks in return. None. Yet she gets herself abused by Jarrod and Carnisoar and now Jellica just to make him stronger? It feels like they are copying Sentai without keeping the actual plot that made such material matter) so she frees a new master. She doesnt do anything to betray Lily. She doesnt take advantage of Lily's kindess.

She saves them twice. :shakefist

And that Carden ( is that the monsters name?) had a great battle with Lily. It's such a pity that it was a throw away fight. They could have made the fight matter in terms of the episode plot. Written Carden as a conspirator to Camille's treacherous ways against Lily. Resulting in Lily lashing out.

Instead, we get an exciting but emotionally empty fight that is just there to eat up time.

You know, when Jellica was about to kick Camille's ass (You know. If anything, Camille is the one who got fucked this episode. She just released yet another master that wants to beat her like an abusive parent... Good one Camille.) I thought Lily would be the one to jump in there and protect her, to repay the favor.

But it was actually Jarrod. Which was strange. Jarrod wants to destroy the rangers. Camille refuses to. So wouldnt that go against this plan. I hope that it was just a case of his inner good resurfacing to protect Camille. Because beyond that inner good that Carnisoar wiped out, Jarrod should feasibly have no reason to protect Camille at that point. But it was wonderful to see it happen.

It was that point where I felt the brunt of the episode title. At that point, everything did feel "pushed to the edge".

At the end of this episode, I didnt want to feel sorry for Lily at all. In reality, I felt fucking terrible for Camille. Seriously, just lean back and look at what's happened to her in this series so far. She's gone through hell and she still submits herself to it. She serves DaiShi whom she has a flirt with but he abuses her and threatens her life.

She has a chance to betray Jarrod and join Naja. Naja would have treated her better. They were part of the same reptilian family, honestly. He saw Jarrod was delaying the plans against the rangers. Camille slew Naja and sided with DaiShi. And in the end, Jarrod didnt thank her. He threatened her again and told her that loyalty was to be expected and nothing more.

That ultimately helps Jarrod free a master who is beating the **** out of Jarrod every day for training. Every time Camille tries to intervene, she's threatened by both Jarrod and Carnisoar and called useless.

She frees a new master, Jellica, who says "I'll be your master Camille" and she only says this to get Jarrod to work for the right to be her student. She plays Camille and then beats Camille.

Camille is the only one being pushed to the damn edge here. Camille was the only one being betrayed or backstabbed here. **** you Lily. Where's our final act showing what Camille is going through after all of this?

If she's not crying herself to sleep then god damn. This is almost worse than what Toxica went through during Mandilok's regime.

When I think of what Camille's been through, I think of this song. Ignore the stupid video. Just listen to the music. I swear to god. Camille written all over it. ****

But the writing needs to step up in terms of substance within the plot.

It could easily be inferred that Dai Shi protected Camille because of how limitless her loyalty has been to her. There are a number of shots in this ep where she is literally all over him, and he doesn't push her away. Personally, I feel like, whether he "wants to" or not, he's softening up to her.

And Lily feels like crap because her kindness ultimately almost got them all killed. It's not about Camille betraying them. It's not THAT episode. But it makes sense for Camille to do her "screw you" routine in the end, when she reveals who she is, because she's still trying to keep up this evil front.

And it's not just to prove it to the Rangers. It's to prove it to herself too.

So true but I cant empathize with Lily at all. Camille did nothing to her. Lily was nice to her, sure, and her suggestion lead to Jellica. But that's not her fault. Lily's acting like she got betrayed the same way Dustin did at the end of the episode. "Maybe I shouldnt be nice anymore". Gah, screw you Lily. Girl has no idea what Camille is going through.

Im more interested in how Camille will get through this. I dont care how Lily gets over herself. Camille is going through so much more at this point it's astounding that the writers havent focused on it yet.

It's not Lily's fault that she doesn't know about Camille's feelings.

Whether or not Camille "did anything" to her isn't really the point. And ultimately, Lily is human. She's gonna feel like crap when what she did led to near death. I mean, it would be strange for her NOT to feel bad about that.
