It's not out of the question that Bin Laden might not really be a goner yet, but if that were the reality of the situation then it would be much more likely at this point that US forces have actually apprehended him and are attempting to extract information about Al Qaeda's operations and prominent figures from him via jumpercable before they send him up to that big Abu Ghraib in the sky. Of course, that would also require falsifying official documents and relaying purposefully misleading information to the public, so I'm going to wager that that's exactly what has happened.
Okay, yeah, that's another one I can believe. I'd say that more or less fits under "the facts of how, when, and where have been kludged," though, since the end is more or less the same.
If there's been any major kludging of facts in the case (and it's totally reasonable to be cynical about
that), there's plenty to be argued about moral ramifications, policy, integrity, etc etc, and that sort of thing will hopefully come out to be discussed in the months to come.
I can also possibly buy "the government really thought they got him, but it turns out they got hoodwinked, well ****." That's possible and would suck a lot, but would also be an entirely different problem from a government conspiracy.
But the theory that Osama is still out there Osama-ing, the government did
nothing, and has willfully and arbitrarily decided to declare him dead as an election tactic (in what is not even an election year)? No, I'm sorry. That theory makes no sense under
any sort of logic: politician, human, or otherwise.
