Old Generation vs. New Generation

I like both old and new gens but if i have to pick, i'd choose the oldies because the sentais especially are more dramatic, whicjh can leave u on the edge of your seats, and the story is laid out well ...

While I do have shows that I don't like I think really both generations have their pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses, and both can be too casually dismissed by folks who prefer one or the other. Worst of all by folks who think that anything that happened before they were born or before they started watching automatically sucks.

Also a lot of folks prefer 80's-modern suit design, to some I can agree with that if only because they can use better materials and make them much sleeker. However, I look at gaudy designs like Den-O or Ryukendo and suddenly the fact that Kikadas suit is a little baggy and has visible eyeholes doesn't seem that bad at all.

There is no era that is flawless and perfect. No era that isn't lacking for something on one level or another. I do think you have trends that can negatively effect the material on occasion but at the end of the day all you really have is the shows themselves and some may be better done than others. There will be crap, and there will be awesome wether it's from 77 or 07.

For me, I liked the old, grainy film better than the newer, digital looking stuff. Colors looked more vibrant and...powerful. Plus, I think slow motion wasn't used as much back then.

Personally, as an old-skool' fan, I think a lot of today's stuff is vapid (especially newer stuff by Toei). American corporate and cultural influence has a lot to do with it, and they have absolutely no understanding of the Promethean fire they have brought to man.

Most became fans by Power Rangers, and want to see more of the same. There's no variety. Sure, they'll get into Super Sentai and Masked Rider and anything by Toei, yet not care for Godzilla, Ultraman and thereabouts. But don't call it tokusatsu as a whole.

I appreciate tokusatsu as a special effects medium, as it should be. It has many genres: Monsters, superheroes, WWII epics, disaster flicks, space adventures and what not. But let's face it; at heart, I'm a fan of monsters, superheroes & robots. Especially in other mediums like comics and animation.

The young ones can't differentiate genres from mediums. They're only into genres, and confuse it with the medium as a whole! (Just like how people think that animation is musical fairy tales, like Disney.) Nowadays anime/manga fans mostly love stories with shoujo, emo kids, and testosterone warriors, and these surplus stories are totally flooding the market and making big bucks. But don't call it the end-all-and-be-all of anime/manga. In fact, don't even call yourself an "anime/manga fan" if you have no appreciation for the medium. Even anime and manga can have superheroes and daikaijuu (as well as super-robots), but the "new generation" cringes away from them. Because it's "not their genre."

Just like the poseurs who go to Hot Topic. They're not real goth/punk people, just people who ride on the bandwagon. What's next, a store that'll make you metrosexual?

I'm a new schooler so I prefer what I'm familiar with.
But I've seen a couple old gen kamen rider and I have a lot of love for it because it's the type of format I grew up on

If I must choose, I must say I GENERALLY prefer old school. Heck, my nickname is as old school as it gets. That's not to say I don't like new school stuff: I rank AGITO as one of the best KRs EVER.

In general though, I think 70s and 80s shows had more emphasis on HEROISM than anything else. Sure they were trying to sell toys, but it didn't seem to me to be as blatant as now. I mean, in sentai we went from one robot to sell to whole armies of robots to sell...

Also, I find the older stuff to have greater emphasis on stunts rather than SFX. That's because of limited low budget technology. These days, it's all CG. Nothing wrong with that by itself but I prefer the old riders leaping and doing somersaults as well as the Ultras literally getting down and dirty while beating up kaiju.

Also, those were the days when ALMOST ALL heroes, whether anime or toku, had songs sung by the legends like Ichirou Mizuki, Mitsuko Horie, Isao Sasaki and some names I forgot (who sang the songs for Fireman and Reideen? the name is ont he tip of my tongue... not to mention the guy who sang Tobe! Gundam)- not to mention having awesome BGMs by Chumei Watanabe and Shunsuke Kikuchi.

Addendum: Spectreman, oh what memories! "We will never know the source of his power and his force as he guides this planet's course! SPECTREMAN!"

I agree, that's ANOTHER thing I hate about Den-O, it looks like whenever they're coming out with a new "form" they're preparing for Bandai's toy designs rather than how it'll come across on screen. I mean look at the original KRs! They'd have the same suit all season. Imagine that! :O_O:
