Is "Attack on Titan" the Defining Anime of Its Generation?

[Justin J]

Having just finished my rewatch of "Attack on Titan," I can't help but feel it truly stands out as a defining anime of our generation. From its intense plot twists to its exploration of moral ambiguity, it managed to push boundaries in a way that I think only a few series have done.

The way it tackles themes like freedom, oppression, and the cycle of violence is just staggering, and let’s not forget about the breathtaking animation from Wit Studio and MAPPA! The character development, especially with Eren, has been so polarizing but also deeply engaging. I find myself constantly revisiting the questions it raises about humanity and survival.

Do you all think "Attack on Titan" deserves the title of "defining anime" for our current era, or are there other contenders that might overshadow it? What are your thoughts on its legacy as we head toward the series conclusion? Let’s hear what you think!

"Attack on Titan" definitely deserves a spot as a defining anime of this generation. The way it starts as a straightforward story about humanity versus titans and evolves into such a complex narrative about freedom and morality is nothing short of brilliant. Eren's transformation is so divisive; some people love it, while others struggle with it, which just speaks to how thought-provoking the series is.

I also appreciate how the animation, especially in the later seasons by MAPPA, really elevates the storytelling. It brings those intense moments to life in a way that feels almost cinematic. In terms of legacy, I think it's going to be referenced in discussions about anime for years to come.

That said, I'd love to hear what other series folks think might rival it, any contenders you all see as on the same level?
