I was just watching a Documentary on Disney & discovered something shocking that will verify everything we believe Disney to be.

There was a reason for the vanishing of hand-drawn animation for the company- apparently after they got the box-office records for Ice Age, Disney executives shut down all of their animation studios & fired at least 300 animators within the week. They decided that Computer Animation was the only way to go & threw all their best artists to the streets...

It wasn't just because of Ice Age; it was also because Treasure Planet and Home on the Range flopped big time.

No, no, no- they got rid of 300 of their 2D animators because of the Pixar animation movie Ice Age.

Their reason was, apparently, because no kid wanted to watch movies like "The Lion King" or "The Little Mermaid" anymore- they would rather watch Computer generated images.:redface2:

Not just animators in general, they got rid of their good ones because the execs considered them outdated.:eyebrow:

Pixar didn't make Ice Age, Blue Sky studios did. And yeah, their other stuff was flopping. Treasure Planet (even if you liked it) ended up doing badly. They figured 3D was the way to go. When they found out they couldn't do it right they just ended up buying Pixar.. lol..

It's a company.. so it's all about the money for them.

They also closed their Canadian studio out of political stuff. :/ One of my animation teachers worked there for a long while. He went into a long story about it.. so most of those 300 people came from that completely seperate incident.

The Princess and the Frog fell below expectations, but not because it was 2D (something critics and movie forcasters loved to blame it on), it failed because it relied on the same old-hat Disney schtick: Musical princess fairy tale crap (which there are now cynical parodies of, especially Disney's own Enchanted). Like it was the 90s all over again. I think Disney needs something more challenging for 2D, like Bolt (their best new film).

Even Brad Bird has a movie project (Ray Gunn) that he wants to do for hand-drawn animation! We'll see what he has in store, once his next film (the live-action 1906) is finished!
