Not much love for Drive?

The simple fact that the Kamen Rider exists and takes the spotlight, makes the government a joke.

No. It might make them ill-equipped, out of their depth, under-represented, or the underdog. It might even make them *incompetent*. But the existence of a greater force does not immediately relegate the police force to "a joke". It certainly *can*, and it is this outcome which we are all complaining about here.

The police force in Kuuga was constantly coming out IN SUPPORT of Kuuga, developing specialized weaponry, investigating the Grongis' patterns of attack, and helping ordinary people in the line of fire. THEY DID IMPORTANT THINGS.

The police force in Agito was one of the organizations represented BY a Kamen Rider. Ozawa and Makoto, hell even Hojo, were all extremely well-represented as police officers doing their duty.

In W, the police force comes off as incompetent at best and corrupt at worst. Just another pawn of the real bad guys, manipulated by a powerful family of influence. The entire city was like that, if you recall. But they were not "a joke".

There have been other Rider shows where the police really *are* jokes, literally. They have played the comic relief, the sidekick, and the pitifully ineffective side-along antagonists at times. But never has it been so bad as in Drive.

There's quite a bit of things that bothers me with Drive, but here are some things that really get into my testies:

-Not having the decency to explain anything about the Roidmude: I can let the whole Kamen Rider identity slide, but why not release any info about them to the public or the police? Oh, it would cause panic... Except the slowdown thing and various sightings of Roidmude is already doing that. Civilian lives are at stake, but this is being kept in the blue.

-Why not create inventions useful for the police and SCU to use: We saw that backpack thing being used to help negate slowdown.... Why isn't this use generally for any special forces? If the couldn't fight, the least they could've done was help any civilians in danger of slowdown. Hopefully, inventions are used more generally in the future.

-Why do the police find the concept of Roidmude silly: Ok, seriously? Despite several sightings, the global freeze happening, and witnesses being there, the police seems to think that roaming monsters is dumb.... Why? There's like witnesses that could've described the events to the police many times.

YEAH! It's like the show doesn't want to use the police despite their main character being a policeman!

They can't even be bothered to give Kiriko an extra door gun! The girl has a Shift Car holster but most of the time it's friggin' empty! Why isn't she constantly partnered up with one of them AND given a weapon that can AT LEAST stall Roidmudes instead of her service pea shooter?

Is this sarcasm, or have you not watched the most recent episode?

To me it does. When the reason for its existence is fundamentally challenged to the point where it cannot be fixed unless it either gives up its role or makes it pointless, it's already a joke. Whether it's Batman, or Kamen Rider, it's the same thing.

We are talking about monsters here. Even a well equipped police force is still a police force fighting monsters. There is no realism there at all.

Exactly, no realism. So why are we expecting realism again? If we're talking superheros doing superhero stuff, then the police should be irrelevant.

Well that's the problem, isn't it? How can you have this discussion if you don't know what the rest of us are talking about?

Commissioner Gordon is still competent despite the presence of Batman. As far as I know, the Metropolis police can still do their job and are intelligent despite Superman flying around.

Or maybe the fact that you're expecting Kuuga style police in Drive is the problem? This is a thread about Drive, not Kuuga.

You make it sound as if a sci-fi or fantasy setting means there's no reason to expect people to act like actual human beings in their position would.

I hadn't... now I feel stupid but let me say this: IT'S ABOUT BLOODY DAMN TIME!

Why Roidmude killing bullets weren't one of the first thing they made after those Shift Car holster is beyond me!

That's a strawman.

I'm saying that if the setting is exaggerated to the point that a superhero is needed, then the level of the lack of competence of the police force/government doesn't really matter.
