North Korea Shell's South Korean Island, World War Looms

Yeah, so if you guys are watching the news, you know that the DPRK has conducted a Artillery Bombardment of the small ROK island of Yeonpyeong.

So far reports say 2 dead, 16 wounded.

It seems the South was conducting a naval exercise in the area when the North opened fire at the Island, which houses a ROK military base, with 100 shells. The South replied in kind, firing some 80 shells back.

So the two Korea's stand again on the brink of war. Some are likening this to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, in that it could be the spark that sets off another World War.......

Well... there is no proof on who started it. And of course the west will say Norht Korea did it and vice versa...
This could be a way to show power, or it could be a reaction to the US refusing to talk with NK last week.

Either way this won't turn into a war for 2 reasons.
1. NK can never win against SK + the west
2. South Korea would win but has no interest in it because it would not be able to afford (financially) a united Korea.

Anyway, I have friends on both sides of that border... 3 sides if you count the US base in SK too... So I hope things don't escalate. Let's just hope not too many people get hurt or killed.

North Korea knows it can't win against the rest of the world, but there always is appeasement. To prevent anymore deaths, countries will give into the attacking country. It's never once worked in history to satisfy everyone's needs and it won't work now. Let's just hope there's a way to stop this as soon as possible and that the solution is found.

Well it probably already stopped.
MY gf is going to Seoul in 2 days... I am a bit worried ^^"

Oh wow. That's not good. Just hope it gets all diplomatic until she can get back or hope she won't go at all.

She can cancel the trip or is it something else that she can't cancel?

North and South have been talking via tele-text, and there have been no more attacks since about 15:30.

So for now it's quite.

But the Stock markets in Asia are falling in the wake of the attacks, the Nekkei and currency's like the Yen and Won are down against the Euro and the USD.

I highly doubt this would cause world war 3. Mostly because the past two world wars happened for very different reasons then this.

Jung Il Jr's flexing his muscles, it seems.

China would probably not back the North if push came to shove; such an endeavor would be an incredibly bad business move and highly disruptive to the already tempermental economy in that country.
