Ninja Assassin - Talk UP!

Stunt performance and "visuals" are not remotely the same thing. The "visuals" are the film's cinematography, lighting, visual effects, color correction, etc., and in that regard, it looked pretty average, maybe a little too dark in some places. The CGI blood is the only thing I would really call crazy. And most of the action in Ninja Assassin was done in real life, albeit by a stunt team and not the leads themselves. There were only a couple instances of wiring and they were mostly no big deal.

And I can't tell if you're joking about the Yuen Woo-Ping comment or not. The Yuen Clan's choreography is some of the most unrealistic out there, and there was definitely nothing in Ninja Assassin that did anything to Iron Monkey. Most of the "unrealistic moves" consisted of random tricking (like that dig-raiz to cork kick at the end), which is not the same as tasteful wirework at all. I know you're just defending it against these critics that think everything has to be super gritty and realistic (blah), and I mostly agree with you, but let's not go overboard.

You obviously didn't read my get my analogy, and in regards to Yuen Woo-Ping's realism, perhaps you should check out his work with Shaw Bros. or 70s directorials, if you haven't already. Most fans already have. That's what you look to for gritty old school. . .

Saw the movie last night.

Was it a bad film? I didn't think so...but was it a good film?

Really, to me it was sort of "Meh", meaning that it's quite forgetable.

The dialogue I thought was really lame, but at least all the fight scenes were cool.

WWould I Recommend it to anyone? Probably not.

I think Bolt told me one time he doesn't like the Shaw Brothers work or choreography. I could be wrong.

I did read your analogy, you just chose not to comment on my response. Yeah, Yuen Woo-Ping's older work is more grounded, but realistic? "Gritty old school" is still 10x more unrealistic than actual combat, which is where the "realism" comparison is supposed to originate. Are you telling me that Dance of the Drunken Mantis and Snuff Bottle Connection feature realistic fight scenes and kung fu technique applications? C'mon... claiming that because Ninja Assassin featured some ridiculous tricking techniques it made Iron Monkey, a movie where every action scene is dominated by wirework, look like an MMA fight is ridiculous hyperbole and you know it.

I don't know where you got that. I like Shaw Brothers films, I just don't mark out for them as much as most casual kung fu enthusiasts do. Really, I appreciate their set design and costuming more than I do their contributions to the art of screenfighting.

Saw it recently, got a free ticket. It was a pretty average and forgettable, all I can really give the movie praise for is the action scenes which were alright but nothing mind blowing. But for a movie like this action is really the only reason you should watch. Unless if you're a screaming fangirl, then Rain is the only reason you should watch this.

The lighting was horrendous in some scenes, yes I can understand that they are trying to emphasize that ninja's blend in darkness and all that but does every scene really have to look like someone forgot to pay the power bill? Seriously there were some non ninja scenes where the lighting was so dark I could barely see Mika. (I wasn't sure if that was supposed to be a joke though)

The acting, plot, characters, and dialogue were horrible and some of it REALLY brought me out of the experience. The plot was so incredibly bad that half of it didn't really make sense. Same goes for a lot of the scenes.

Like I said earlier all I can give this movie props for is the action sequences, which is really the point of the movie. It wasn't wall to wall wire fu like you'd expect it to be (well with a pop singer in the staring role and all) and it wasn't weighed down by tons of CGI. It really did remind me of those cheesy blood bath movies with limbs flying off left and right and obvious fake blood everywhere. And I think they were going for that with a hint of Ninja Gaiden.

All that being said like hell I'd pay $12 to see it. Its worth a watch sure but I wouldn't pay that much to see it.

I got to see the movie for free and the only thing that got me excited was the action scenes ... other than that, it was a major bore (thank goodness, i didn't have to pay a single cent)
