I find that to be absolutely ridiculous given that several of the war crimes trials for junior officers used their own words from japanese newspaper accounts where they told of the number of civilians, they killed or bayoneted.True, but at the time of the war, many of the jpn citizens did not actually know what was going on.
Those internal dynamics of resentment and abuse made them ripe for committing atrocities.Also if you read stories like barefoot gen, you'ld see that many of the soldiers were basically forced into service, and were in horrible living conditions and such.
