Letters From Iwo Jima

I think it's a little simplistic to say that the Japanese were the 'good guys' or the 'bad guys'. Some of them were honorable soldiers, fighting for what they believed in, and to defend their country. Others did things that matched the Nazi atrocities commited in the concentration camps. Some of the civilians knew what was happening, others didn't. Some didn't want to know.

I understand that many of them were forced into service. But then I read about events like the Bataan Death March, and the Rape of Nanking, and I can't just give them a pass. At the same time, I think those individual Japanese who comitted those war crimes, and the leaders who ordered them to do it, should be held responsible.

There are atrocities in every war. But WW2 took things to another level.

To get another perspective on the Japanese during WW2, check out the film Men Behind the Sun.
