Letters From Iwo Jima

Good story but keep in mind the japnese weren't like the "Reluctent member of the Axis" or anything....they did some pretty brutal and nasty Shee-it during WWII too.

True, but at the time of the war, many of the jpn citizens did not actually know what was going on. And theres several stories about how they were goaded into fighting to the death and such. You have to think about it from their perspective, they had NEVER lost a battle prior to ww2, and thought that god was on their side.

Also if you read stories like barefoot gen, you'ld see that many of the soldiers were basically forced into service, and were in horrible living conditions and such.

I don't think its necessary the fault of the citizens of jpn, but rather their leaders, and their blind faith in their emperor.

It also depends on your side of the story, I know that the jpn think of Hiroshima and are like, how could the US do something so awful to us? But the US views Pearl Harbor in the same light. One of my sensei's had a talk with one of her cab drivers when she went home and he was dead set on the states being horrible monsters for even considering to use the bomb on Hiroshima and we were horrible cuz we were cutting off their oil supply and slowly starving them etc.

I don't really want to get into this any further than this just cuz its a really sensitive subj and i'm not a history major, and i'm not about to go and research tons of stuff for a thread

The movie did a good job of showing that it was regular people fighting for what they felt was right in that war. And it was their powers that be that put them into war.

Japanese weren't fighting because they were evil goblins. They fought because they loved their country.

Same as our people.

The Japanese goverment wouldn't be the first to thrust its people into an unjust war.

I thought it was a great film for perspective, but it doesn't have a lot of rewatch value. It's the kind of thing you watch and go "wow, that was really good!" and then forget about.

I want to see a movie sympathizing with Nazi soldiers.
Letter from Iwo Jima was decent but not good.

Das Boot is a German prospective WW2 movie and easily one of the best movies ever. What I wanna see is a WW2 FPS game from the German side (and no Battlefield doesn't count cuz its multiplayer:P ).

As for Letters from Iwo Jima, it wasn't an action oriented war movie, it looked more like a retreat war movie and it felt like the Japanese were helplessly losing which wasn't true. Theres this scene where the JPN soldiers try to cross in front of a US Marine machine gun post and get gunned down in seconds, then they try again and again which looks damn retarded to me. They didn't even bother to lay down covering fire. It's as if Eastwood doesn't want them to kill American soldiers so we'd sympathize with them. Plus the negative attitude of many of the main characters felt like no one ever wanted to fight which is kinda stupid and unrealistic. I mean that officer who always shouted was probably the only one who wasn't complaining about his duty.

Best scene though was:

[hide] The grenade suicide scene. [/hide]

Well, the military isn't really renowned for its logical tactical maneuvers and strategies, ironically.

I thought the movie was great. Plus, it was based on a true story which made it even better...

...and more fucked up during the 'gernade' scene.
