I'm really curious about OOO's sales, but we probably won't have the figures for a long while. (Like, I still haven't seen a figure for Decade, yet....)

Well I can tell you right now that the OOO medals for his form changes are hard to find and sell out quickly. Toywise OOO is doing fine. This goes pretty much for any OOO roleplay device.

Lynx, I wasn't pertaining to the merchandise, but rather about how their imagination works. I had the same when I was a kid.... You can't touch me 'cause I now have a force field... But now I have a force field blast which can nullify that. But then I have a deflector that cancels that out... etc... etc... etc... I'll pull a weapon out of thin air...

Okay, he grew out of his smugness, but he was kind of a jerk for a long time.

I'm referring to the episode when he realized he and Eiji were not so different. That's a pretty big step up compared to other secondary Riders. No doubt we have Accel to thank for that.

Even at that, I don't really think your argument holds up. Little kids usually aren't capable of the kind of abstract thought required to understand time travel stories that involve causality rather than a simple change of period scenery. Cognitive development doesn't reach that phase until you're dealing with 10-to-12 year olds, with maybe some precocious 8-year-olds.

If Kabuto was really about entertaining kids first and foremost, it wouldn't have included such obviously age-inappropriate story material. Clearly, Kabuto was writing to try and entertain audiences older than little kids, probably assuming that kids would tune in for cool superheroes beating on evil bugs even if they otherwise didn't know what was going on.

I don't think you can really excuse any lapse in Rider show writing as "well, it's for kids." No, Rider self-evidently isn't just for little kids. The shows with the highest ratings are ones like Agito and Hibiki that cater very obviously to housewives in the audience. If you produce tokusatsu strictly for little kids the result is something like Kabutack, not Kabuto or OOO.

Kabuto's lapses in writing usually amounted to "as long as the fights look cool, people will probably let us get away with it." And often that is the case! It has nothing to do with exploiting the way little kids think. Most adults are willing to be really credulous if a story is going to involve a lot of action and special effects.

Oh man... I'm in a world of hurt now... I'm not even trying to argue. It was more of a how kids are imagining things and us adults try to over analyze stuff, and I have been guilty of that... Whatever you want, as long as your happy. I try to enjoy the shows in my own way and you do the same. :thumbs:

Like what I mentioned before, folks have their own opinions. I was just trying to express myself.

Who cares if OOO is light toned. No one said it had to be serious.

The Greed are an exaggerated and cartoony. They pose a completely unreal and impossible "threat." Their backstory renders them far more pitiable than genuinely sinister. Some of them, like Gamel, were clearly meant to even be identifiable.

The Greed are perfectly at home in OOO's light tone. Gotou, on the other hand, tends to feel like a guy who wandered in from some other show and is very confused about what he's seeing.

To be fair I think all of them, except Gamel, try to be serious it's just there are things that ruin it. Mainly Mezool turning into a school girl and Uva's actor making weird faces all the time, which isn't really intentional it just ended up being funny. Poor guy...As for Cazari I think he's a pretty normal villain. He betrayed his "friends" and even used two of them as an experiment for his desire.

And doesn't every Rider/Sentai villain pose a completely unreal and impossible threat?

A few times I thought of going "except Kazari," I just couldn't think of how to word it. He is as close to a standard villain as OOO gets.

What's funny is that on his own merits, he's nothing special... but compared to how the other OOO villains conduct themselves, he does kinda come off like Hannibal Lecter.

It usually depends on how grounded the show is. A lot of early Showa villain plots involved bombings and kidnappings, which certainly do happen. Kuuga's enemies were basically just serial killers, which certainly exist.

A lot of Rider will use the fantastic villains as a metaphor for something that's actually dangerous and bad. I don't really see OOO as having gone that route yet, though. I think it wants to keep the villains steeped in fantasy to help keep things light.
