Those collegiate races are ratings poison. Last time Toei tried to air new programming opposite one (last year), they pulled some of the lowest ratings for a KR and Sentai in history.

Lesson: Don't even try to compete with college sports. Just take the week off.

Yeah, but it was also opposite a college race (the Hakone Ekiden), which happened to take its highest ratings in ten years. KR's air date typically doesn't fall opposite this race and I imagine they only decided to air it this time because they had already taken a week off for New Year's.

I'm not implying (other than humorously) that they took off this week because of that. I'm just saying, there is a very good reason they don't want to compete with college sports.

That relay race is a really big deal in Japan, though.

But i always wonder why is it such a big deal that it needs to be aired live on National TV ? I mean, common, its just a bunch of colleage kids running around, right? Heck, maybe i should get our local broadcasters here to show our yearly marathon live from next year onwards lol
