Kamen Rider Gaim - Lock 01 "Transform! An Orange From The Sky!?"

Also, was there anything that really said Eiji's parents were dead? Things I'm looking at say he was travelling with his grandfather, which would make it seem they were dead, but I don't remember any mention of them.

I believe it was said Eiji's father was a politician.Whether he died or not's never been explicitly stated, so I err on the side of him being alive.

We know that she'll probably die close to the end and come back to life either in the very last episode or in a crossover movie.

no, we don't. so far, this series has already broken a few of the trends for post-Decade series, so who's to say that one won't be broken too?

also, unlike Philip, Ankh, Kengo, and Koyomi, this girl wasn't mentioned in any pre-show material, another thing that sets her apart

Well, that was an interesting first episode. There seems to be a lot of set up for the world and how it works, which is something I like a lot, it automatically seems much more interesting than what we had with Wizard and it opens up a lot of possibilities for the future and where the story can go. Then again, the last show that tried something like this was Go-busters and that gave Wizard a run for its money in the competition to see which can be the blandest toku show ever.

I'm excited for a "rider war" as its something we haven't had for quite a while and it seems much more fitting with the samurai theme than yet more pseudo-rivals. It seems some of the riders will be teaming up too, which I doubt is by their own choice, so it'll be interesting to see if the writers actually take that dynamic somewhere or if we'll be stuck with the usual tropes of "I'm forced to team up with you, but we'll be best friends after a few episodes". If we're doing the whole Rider war thing, then I want some good old fashioned heel turns, hopefully with a bit more depth than what we've had in the past.

It's too soon to really comment on the characters, but Gaim himself seems like a less annoying version of Ryotaro.. and I will say that the suit designs have actually grown on me quite a bit.

I have a feeling that things will be quite serious. The OP itself is kinda haunting...a prelude to what might happen.

People on /m/ have said that during the opening when Kota is clinging to the fence and watching himself hold the orange lockseed, he's saying "Don't Do It". Pretty much all of the opening is one big "tin-foil hat" speculation fest

Overall, great episode, I'm definitely looking forward to more. Something which I probably haven't said since Fourze

You know I just noticed something.

Kota's sister was actually Sailor Mercury from PGSM. The resemblance is damn precise that it can't be false.

First Sailor Moon's multiple appearances in the Rider franchise (Sawai Miyuu guest starring the Kamen Rider W's portion of the Decade/W Movie Taisen, and Sawai Miyuu's latest appearance in Kamen Rider Wizard's final episodes), now we have Sailor Mercury entering the Rider franchise.

I knew, but I'd also looked up the cast.

Maria Cranberry from W's Gaia Memories of Fate was Queen Beryl.
Nomura Shizuka from Kiva was Luna (human form).
Snowgel (voice) and Hiso (voice) in Magiranger and Gekiranger were Luna (voice).
Ibuki was Mamoru/Endymion. He was also Nakazato Hiroshi in episode 15 of Kyoryuger.
Someone in episode 45 of Dekaranger was Jadeite.
Gamel was Nephrite. He was also someone in Kabuto, but EN wiki linked to JP wiki, and I can only read the name of the series.
Someone in Blade (again, can't read the JP wiki) was Kunzite. He was also someone in episodes 32 and 37 of OOO.
Shizuka from GARO was Mio Kuroki.
Kamen Rider 1 (The First/The Next) was Motoki.
Someone in episodes 11-12 of Den-O was Minako's Manager. He was als--- wait?! FUEKI was Minako's Manager?!?!?! I totally didn't catch that!!

So, yeah, a lot of the PGSM cast have gone on to do other Toku roles, and a lot of them in KR. There's probably more, but I was just checking the cast on Wikipedia, and most of the links were to EN wikipedia, which rarely has a lot of info on toku actors.

It was almost kinda weird watching this. It's definitely much calmer than recent Rider shows. I think I've just gotten so used to Rider being like a 24 minute sugar rush that it seems odd going back to a more measure pace with less flash.

I didn't love it, but it has my interest. That's enough to bring me back next week.

This was Gamel.

What struck me most was how many different tones the first episode of Gaim managed to successfully execute.

- The action has all the sugary, wam-bam spectacle of the Modern Heisei riders.
- The grounded relationship drama is soaked in heavy J-Drama style. The camera setups and tone were very reminiscent of Kuuga and Agito in that regard. (Only with modern video quality! Yay!)
- The dancing/Pokemon-battling gangs infuse the bright, youthful, upbeat, pop style that made so Fourze appealing.

If I had to describe the premiere to an existing fan, I'd say it was a solid mix of Agito, Ryuki, and Fourze's first episodes. Which is RAD AS HELL!

If I had to describe the series to a casual fan who wouldn't immediately understand the above references, I'd describe it as "Kamen Rider iOS 7."

Here's hoping they can execute the whole series as well as they executed the premiere. I'm very excited for Gaim!
