Kamen Rider Drive - News/Rumours Thread 1

Are you kidding me? Rider only recently got better, but starting with Agito, Rider was the king of reusing writers. Between Ryuki and Kiva, except Blade and the first half of Hibiki, all Rider series have been written by exactly three people: Inoue, Yonemura and Kobayashi.

You're talking about different periods though... The last show with Inoue as the main writer is now 6 years in the past.

Even in that period though, Yonemura was pretty much a new writer to Rider with Kabuto too, only having written 2 Hibiki episodes before that. If we're ignore the more recent shows, then Kobayashi only had two Rider series and was new to Rider with Ryuki, only having written one Agito episode before. Blade and Hibiki also had new writers too. The only stand out was Inoue as a recurring main writer in 3 series and a half, and also having big role as secondary writer in two shows (Ryuki and Kabuto), but the other shows often had new names for the writing team.

Also, your statements about Sentai's main writers in that period aren't really right. Arakawa was the main writer of both Abaranger and Dekaranger in the period you mention there, and, for example, Magiranger's main writer had already done many Sentai episodes before that (8 Abaranger episodes, 9 Hurricanger ones) so you can't really say that it was a new talent to Sentai either.

That's why I said Rider got better recently. But if you look at the era Decade-Drive, even now, Toei reuses writers : Decade pretty used again the writers involved in the former era, and while Riku Sanjo was indeed new blood, it's telling that it's his third Rider show as a major writer in less than 7 years, and his second as main writer : OOO had the return of Kobayashi and Wizard was the return of Hibiki's Kida. Urobuchi was the only Rider writer who was completely new involved in writing Rider since W (yes, Nakashima was also new in Fourze as head writer, but Sanjo and Hasegawa are also key writers in Fourze)

I agree that Sentai wasn't really better since Shinkenger, with its excessive use of Kobayashi. But Goseiger was only Yokote's second sentai show, and Sanjo was new blood in Kyoryuger.

If you look at it from a producer standpoint: the over-reliance on a handful of writers is even more apparent:

Takabe: Inoue (for Kiva), Kobayashi (for OOO), Kobayashi (for Gobusters), it's only with Urobuchi that she finally went with someone entirely new.
Utsunomiya: Kobayashi (for Shinkenger), Arakawa (for Gokaiger), Kida (for Wizard), Kobayashi (for Toqger)
Omori: Sanjo (for Kyoryuger) and Sanjo (for Drive)

Whether it's just a conservative mentality or just going for a known quality, I think repeatedly relying on one or two writers is not a good strategy. They should rather think of picking out those secondary writer who have been doing good work and think of promoting them instead of relying on old talent. Look at Hasegawa and Komura, both of them at least deserve a shot at being main writer especially how Komura did better material than Kida with Wizard and Hasegawa certainly did better with Fourze than Sanjo.

Oh in a way they already do : both Hasagawa and Komura are pretty much at least co-head writers ; working as a secondary writer with Kida as head writer is pretty much a guarantee of being at least as involved as the head writer (unlike being secondary writer for main writers like Inoue and Kobayashi who only let secondary writers have meaningless fillers). Komura wrote 22 episodes of Wizard compared to 27 from Kida.
Likewise, Komura has been pretty much co-head writer of Gokaiger and the first season of Akibaranger with Arakawa (she wrote almost half of the first season of Akiba, and 15 episodes of Gokai (including most of the Basco arc) compared with 25 writeen by Arakawa .

Likewise, Hasegawa has been involved a lot in W (writing almost as much episodes as Sanjo (20 vs 25), and it's likely it's gonna be the same in Drive, given he's already been mentioned despite not being the head writer.

In my opinion, what should be more done is to have head writers who let others writers be able to shine (meaning, goodbye Kobayashi)

If we are lucky in the Gaim X Drive movie, Mai might come back from the dead as a Female Rider with the Golden Fruit Lockseed ala Koyomi. Really the only major change I'd make to Gaim would be to make her a Rider.

1. You're assuming Mai is even going to die.
2. Last time I checked, this is about Drive, not Gaim.

Also, IIRC, last time both Nakagawa and Naruse worked together was in Decade.

Besides, Sanjo and Hasegawa in Rider isn't exactly fresh blood : they've been involved in both W and Fourze.
Masaru Igami (who is Inoue's father) was main writer for many shows in the Tohru Hirayama era (Original series thru Super-1).

So this ''repetition'' goes way back.

Actually, Masaru Igami lost his position as the main writer right after Skyrider's retool. He wrote for Super-1 too, but not as a main writer.

Hyper Hobby scans. Getting some big Queen & Elizabeth vibes from the characters that the Fourze and OOO girls from KR Girls will be playing in the 2nd episode. Is Drive just going to be W 2.0 from the cops' perspective? I mean there's investigations, the monsters in both series can be connected to the Internet/computers (Dopants use USBs, Roimyuudo are lights on the net or whatever), and now Shinnosuke might have his own Futo Street Irregulars?

Oh plus Omori says "Drive won't ride a bike at all" in his interview according to the dudes over at 2ch.

Most of the creative team: both the writers and the director was the same team that made W so that might be a conscious move on Toei (and Omori's) part to try and capture lightning in a bottle again so to speak.
