As far as I'm concerned, direct to DVD is great because then we get to see it sooner.

While it's true that they're more convenient, direct-to-DVD release means that these types of movies are of less importance than theatrical releases, and generally don't have as much of a budget

Man, did you see the Den-O Trilogy? Those were theatrical releases and looked pretty terrible. Come Back Shinkenger was direct-to-DVD and looked as good as any other episode despite being longer.

It'll be fine. Whining that Toei doesn't love W enough for theatrical releases misses the point. We don't even know that anyone who worked on this ever wanted them to be theatrical releases.

The one thing that's getting me about this:

I can understand Accel getting his own little side-story movie thing... but why Eternal? Is there something in their movie that makes him a viable character beyond "Horrible Terrorist"?

Apparently Sanjo wrote this absurdly detailed backstory for NEVER and most of it had to be cut completely from A to Z at the script stage. That meant they had material for a backstory special already prepared, more or less.

Also, the performer who played Eternal-- Matsuoka-- was apparently very enthusiastic about coming back to portray the character again. So Matsuoka did interviews saying "Toei should make an Eternal spin-off!" and so Toei did.

Right now Toei is more focused on the 40th anniversary movie. To have the two W movies going direct-to-dvd is not just playing it safe, but it also helps relieve the pressure.

So, does this mean you guys think the Sentai Vs. movies are less special? Cus I don't think they are.

I thought it was pretty obvious that Shinkenger vs Go-onger, the first Vs movie made for theatrical release (rather than just sent to the theaters like Go-on vs Geki), had a bigger production value than previous Vs specials, which in some aspects seemed to have budgets lower than standard tv episodes (just compare the Lio and Mele hand to hand battles in Bouken vs Geki and in the tv show).

To add, there were a lot of Matsuoka fans who wanted to see him back on the screen to play Eternal.
