Avatar: The Last Airbender even utilizes the lightning as a stronger attack by Azula of the Fire Nation. :D

Avatar's elemental system was also pretty clearly based on the four Western elements, despite the series otherwise using Asian aesthetics whenever possible.

Avatar's elemental system was also pretty clearly based on the four Western elements, despite the series otherwise using Asian aesthetics whenever possible.

Those elements were based on many philosophies, not just from the Western Culture. Tattva, Mahabhuta, and even Miyamoto Musashi's book of the Five Rings utilizes the four elements but has an extra element for spirit or void.

When you include void you're dealing more with a derivative of the Chinese five-elemental system, separate from the Western system-- the elements express slightly different things. If you include spirit as the Hindu systems do, that's also different, with I think a slightly different Buddhist counterpart that uses "ether" instead.

You're right about the Mahabhuta having a four-element system that could have been used as a basis in Avatar. I tend not to think of that since sort of the "point" of the Buddhist four-element system is spiritual and allegorical, while the Western system was (IIRC) intended primarily as a way to describe physical substances.

While benders do clearly have their foundational philosophies, the show mostly emphasizes their ability to move around physical substances of the correct type-- that feels more like a Western approach to me.

Yeah I get your drift, it was created by Americans so I guess Western culture did dominate the Avatar: The Last Airbender's concept even if its visually Asian.

Actually, when I was watching the show, I was hoping that another element be introduced, which is the element of void (probably black holes or something) which the Avatar will be having a hard time beating since it was not part of his cycle, but that is probably reserved if there is another season in the future, and I am getting OT. Hehehe.

You know, I thought the same thing going through the show, too-- I was really hoping they'd pull out an end-of-series twist where void showed up as a "lost" fifth element. Avatar really knew its stuff when it came to Asian culture (they even understood that Chinese, Japanese, and Korean things all have their own aesthetic!) so it just felt like the sort of thing they'd probably do.

Haha yeah I agree. Who knows, if there is ever a following to the series, they may introduce a 5th element. After all, they haven't even revealed where Zuko's mother is.

Back to the topic, I wonder if there will be a 5th element in the future at Phillip's disposal...

Apart for the "Phillip will die" rumor. Accel or Axel is coming more into the light

Here is the newest bunch of W rumors. This comes from a poster on 2ch who has been spot on with everything he's posted lately.

-W's Second Rider will utitlize the "Accel Memory"

-The Second Rider may appear briefly, at the end of the Double Movie

-The Second Rider's identity seems to be that of a Genius Physicist who cooperates with the police named Ukyou Suji. Ukyou has the character for "Right" in his name. There's a big chance he's related to Philip.
