It's open to interpretation what happened in the fight they never showed, and if he even survived that. I prefer to think he died too afterwards, if only for closure. At least dying tragically by his partner's hand gives the character a little more of his dignity back than leaving him wandering the streets ragged and completely insane, talking to himself about darkness like a lunatic until one day he dies alone in a ditch and rots away with rats eating his face, while Tendou is in France making pancakes and la men. :disappoin

I always just figured they both attacked each other as a "You go, I go" sort of ending. I know it's open to interpretation, but that's what I've always felt.
