Kaijin Design Post-AgitΩ

while there are KR monster types that can't necessarilly be described as frightening visually, I don't exactly think that a monster/inhumanoid has to look scary to be scary, since a lot of monsters are frightening in what they do.

Worms come off as scary because with their ability to disguise themselves as humans, it would make people wary of each other i.e. if someone you really trusted or cared for turned out to be a Worm, you might begin to be fearful of just about anybody. While this ability is shared with Fangires, Worms copy actual people, rather than simply hide there true form by appearing human

There are also monsters that can be scary because of how easily and somewhat unstoppably kill people. the two prime suspects here are Orphenochs and Fangires. Orphenochs just extend their fingers to stab a person through the heart, which usually results in death rather than the intention of creating new Orphenochs. Fangires OTOH are frightening because they can kill people without even touching them. The way they kill with disembodiesd fangs is horrible because it's nearly impossible to prevent, since the death happens very quickly and even if a person dodges them, the fangs can be redirected.

Then there are odd examples like Imagin. Making a contract with one is like making a deal with the devil. sure they'll do something for you, but the consequences can be grave. By going into the past, an Imagin can potentially cut short a person's life or alternatively ruin that person's life, and the victim wouldn't realize it until it's too late. and the idea that their appearances are twisted from people's own imaginations is kinda scary to think about.

but of course there are also simpler ones like Makamo who are basically giant mutant killer animals, and I mean mutant is regards to their appearance, not the physiology, and the Undead, who are essentially just monsters created to fight each other for supremacy of the earth. Dopants are a greatly exxagerated form of saying drugs are bad, and lastly Mirror Monsters are just monsters that feed off each other to survive

Faiz has some great, memorable monsters of the week that are genuinely creepy/weird. It also has Pigeon Orphenoch, and all I remember him for is being defeated by Kiba when he was Faiz, or Barnacle Orphenoch, who gets killed by Takumi that time he turns into Delta. Cool designs, but their most memorable qualities are who they were beaten by.

One more thing I liked with Orphenochs was that most of them felt that they were their own character and didn't just sprung up from the evil organization's lab. They had their own qualities and they had a convincing set of skills which pretty much fits their design.

Personally, I think that Kamen Rider should try to be scary within its limits. It should also try to be a lot of other things (uplifting, funny, melancholy, heroic, etc.) but providing some sense of fear is important. Scary monsters = Strong heroes, IMHO.

I share the same opinion on that one.

I agree Iga, very well said. Basically what Iw as trying to get out in less words.

I think the best example of not exactly the best suit being put to amazing use would be Terror. Its basically just some pants and a weird headmask thing, but the sheer horror it brings out when Terror appears just elevates that simple concept into something truly horrifying.

Really? I always thought there were one of the most "pop out of the bushes" monsters and the only time they were really too important outside of the main three was when they were part of Lucky Clover. There may have been a few instances of them being worth a crap outside of that, but generally not so much.

Which kinda always disappointed me about Kabuto, even with fodder returning, that's what most of the baddies felt like.

Well, because most of them were humans once which had violent deaths and not just your average spawned by the big boss type of kaijins I guess.

A creepy monster doesn't suit a relatively light-hearted series like Double, IMO.
Eh...hm, guess you do have a point. Anyways, I guess I'm alone on this but I really dislike the designs of the Orphenochs most of the time. I mean, they are too monotoned for me. I don't mean that I want many colors and stuff, but I had problem figuring out their motifs sometimes and once in a while they all look the same to me. It worked for some designs and they stood out well like Kiba and Wolf, and what's that third guy in Kiba's group's motif again? Anyhow yeah, and I don't like how they visualized how Orphenochs kills.

^ He's talking about Kaido, Snake Orphenoch who also played Juuzo in Shinkengers.

@Oblivion: Well, sorry to hear that you have trouble recognizing the details, it's understandable I guess, but some guys like me easily recognize the details in the Orphenochs, especially some cool combination of concepts.

Horse Orphenoch = Greek Warrior + Centaur
Bat Orphenoch = Cowboy + Bat
Snake Orphenoch = Snakeskinned leather jacket dude + Snake
etc.
