I have a confession to make here.......

That's not a stereotype. Americans can be real dicks. Just as people everywhere can be real dicks.

I dunno about Asperger's, but I remember one time being in a class with a girl who had ADD. She had a note from the doctor that she had to be given a quiet room to take her tests and such. The professor was mandated by national law to comply, but he was always complaining about it in private, saying things like "Why can't she just get over it?"

The professor was a really good guy otherwise. But that just underscored how even good people can turn kind of heartless about conditions they don't understand, especially when it inconveniences them in some way. With "new" conditions like Asperger's and ADD, they might not even think they're "real" conditions. Because in the days before those conditions were recognized as genuine mental disorders, people were just told to get over it, that they were just not trying hard enough to do well or fit in.

So a lot of observers, still stuck in the past, just want to tell you that it's a failure on your part so that they won't have to deal with it anymore. But they're still wrong. I think you can at least take heart with the fact that you're born into an era where your condition will have a name, that you can tell people what you have, find others like you, and have science on your side.

Dude, watch Mary And Max, it's one of the best films I ever saw in Sundance Festival. It's about dealing with Aspergers in a sense.

Anyway, being an Aspie isn't that bad and we don't really mind, as long as you don't follow in the footsteps of another infamous Aspie HJU member here who tries to ruin ever body's fun every time he doesn't get the current joke.

I don't even have the words to describe how ignorant that all sounds.

Well, I might be genuinely ignorant on this. I grew up in pretty small towns and on military bases. I've seriously never encountered someone getting made fun of over having Asperger's or ADD or what-have-you while I was in school.

It was just something no one cared about. The kids who were so disabled they needed aides and the kids with noticeable physical disabilities got picked on, but milder conditions just didn't merit any attention.

I do have quite a few friends these days who live with Asperger's. Some of them have mentioned having difficult childhoods, but never specifically because people knew about their condition. More just kids picking on nerdier kids as groups of kids are wont to do.

i think i know who that guy is.

I've got ADHD like I said in the older thread. Doesn't stop me from being in the soccer, basketball, and softball team. Doesn't stop me from taking a test in a normal class. Doesn't stop me from being class president. Doesn't stop me from being the guy everybody likes (lol i know i sound like such an ego bastard), and it doesn't stop me from getting good grades, doing Model UN, Global Issues, Online Publications, and Debate Clubs.

I manage a 3.8 Average GPA without trying and I have the IQ of 153. Me and my friends have a dance crew and we form a rock band together too. I also do school plays. I take Kung Fu and other forms of martial arts in my free time, as well as DJ-ing for school dances.

^ That's all the accomplishments I get done. I thank God for having ADHD because it keeps me in motion all the time. I take a pill of Fish Oil to help improve my focus (everyone can take this, they don't have to be ADHD like me).

I know it sounds like I'm showing off, but these accomplishments are an example that people with any form of mental disorder is as capable as any normal person. If the person needs an extra five minutes to catch on, gladly lend it to them. If someone's talented and fast enough, good for them.

I think it depends on the society and community too though. In Thailand, the society and community has a rather amazing amount of loving and caring people, that's why I never felt different all my life. Heck, I didn't find out I have ADHD until I finished 8th grade. I'm in 10th grade now, and I'm living a fine life. Time management is a bit of a problem though.

People can be dicks if they want to, but the dicks that I know are also my best friends. We tease each other, weird each other out as kids, but as we grow older, everyone matures out and comes together by the time we hit Middle School and start 6th grade together.
