Garo: The One Who Shines in the Darkness episode 25

At some point I'm going to go back and rewatch the older Garo series, which when I first saw it didn't seem all that special. Something better change to make that different, or I'm coming back to call all the "old school fans" out on their BS.

I'm not caught up on this series yet (just finished 18 this morning), but so far it's been the most interesting Tokusatsu this year, and all these "this show sucks" just looks silly.

What about this series is better?

Can't be the CGI. Can't be the armor fights. Sure as hell can't be the plot because that **** itself so hard that they only barely begin to address the mystery the ENTIRE SHOW IS BUILT ON, in such an awkward and awful way.

The characters? That's fine I guess. I don't agree.

The monsters?

**** no. Even the *BASIC* Horrors in Garo season 1 and 2 looked way more fantastic than any of the bullshit we got here.

What are you hoping to find better?

I'm really curious.

Also, just because in your opinion this is the most interesting Toku of the year, does not invalidate that it could have a pretty shitty plot. Because even ignoring everything else, the writing is God Awful.

EDIT: Let me make my self clear on this show.

I don't want to hate it.

I'm fine with a new character, I'm fine with a new setting.

But why I love the original Garo is its amazing action, mostly it's IN SUIT action, and amazing monsters and perfect blend of CGI and practical effects. I love that the main hero isn't some newbie who is just learning the ropes, I love that he's largely seasoned and competent...but still growing. Still developing. It really feels like we found a hero who isn't perfect, but also isn't green. Some one worthy of being a knight.

The plot I could let slide because it consistently held up the rest. Interesting monsters of the week, great fights, great suits.

And fucking Gouten. Gouten is the best thing about *ANY* Garo season.

Season 3...

I don't even hate it.

I'm disappointed by it.

It's a discussion I'm not able to have yet, because I haven't watched the first two seasons. I will say that where I am the plot is still pretty solid, the fight scenes are definitely the best of 2013. The CGI is awful, but that's a toku staple so whatever. And what I remember of the couple episodes of Garo I saw, the main character was a strong, silent-type. That's an insta-loss in terms of character.

That you can actually argue. With or without suits the fight choreography is damn impressive. Maybe even better than season 1 and 2 but they make up for it with wire works and effects.

You really want to see the difference in action between the two though. Go watch that new movie with Jabi and Rekka and then go watch any episode where Rian fights. Biiiiig difference. But whatever because she's still prettier than both of them.

Jabi's neck would snap Rian's spine and eat it for breakfast.

Yes I am both defending Jabi and making a joke about how long her neck is.

COME AT ME

I don't see how that's an instant loss, myself.

Especially since he has yet to start to grow as a person and as a knight.

I'll be honest here. Garo Yami Wo Terasu Mono was actually just a disappointment for me. I liked it, don't get me wrong. But I really wasn't a HUGE fan of it. Still prefer Kouga as Garo. The plot was decent, but.....just really let me down. The trailer made me way more hype than the show ended up being.

Plus, too much CGI. I loved Garo because of the in-suit battles. I'm glad we saw the actual Garo armor in episode 23, but still. One episode out of 25 just really isn't cutting it for me. And Ryuga....again a let down for me.

Someone on the board said this early on when Garo first came out and I agreed, did anyone else get an Ultraseven X feel? I got that ALOT. Especially early on.

It is "AN answer" but it's far from sufficient. Sure you can let your mind fill in the blanks just like fans let there minds fill in the blanks about the Rider and Sentai mulitverse and look how well that turns out whenever people start discussing it. You get a hundred different theories just like what's happening now in this thread. The black armor was the hook for the series when it was first announced. People wanted to know how and why it changed and now we do. In the last episode, in one sentence, that had nothing to do with the series plot. That's not sufficient. The least they could of done was an episode or a flashblack that has something to do with the villains in the series. Something that connects it to everything else.

If the show's answer is "you figure it out" then it has failed as a story. God knows I'm not getting any armored hero badass action out of this season, so I have to rely on the story and...it's just not good. This is the big mystery and hey they explain it! Not really. What could the previous Garo have fought that was so powerful? How does the armor being gold make it more powerful? How does it share its gold with other armors?

I fundamentally disagree with these. A work of fiction is not an encyclopedia of its mythos. A show is supposed to let your imagination run wild.

If a work of fiction attempts too much to create a reality that can be described with its own laws, then we get something like Naruto where people have constructed its own set of sciences. Logic soon fails (because after all, it is not the real world and is not bound by the same set of logic), and then you lose appreciation for the story it's trying to tell.
