Donald Glover wants to be Spider-Man

That's true, he doesn't look like Steve Rogers, but why can't we wait until the real picture release online soon? Maybe he'll look better?

Trust me , a publicity photo from perhaps even a year ago even would not be a great reference to judge off of.

So what if Airbender isn't iconic yet? The Marvel characters have existed far longer than Airbender and have been with multiple generations of fans whereas Airbender has only a generation as it's base so it won't instantly be iconic right now ,though it is building a large base abroad. Does that really justify the whitewashing of Katara and Sokka the darkest characters of the show. Of course not!

What's the whole problem with a black Spiderman? Unlike Cap or Batman, his character's race can be changed and still keep the essentials of Spiderman. That has been proven time and time again with the Indian Spiderman comics and the Japanese manga and TV show .

Wins2, why would the general audience be alienated if Spiderman was made black? It's been proven that changes can be accepted (to which degree is to the viewer themselves) as long as the film's story and plot is atleast passable and or good to suspend disbelief. While i am not for the inclusion of Don Howard as Spiderman just because he's black , i do favor his challenging of the status quo and its double standard that whites can play other whites and minorities ,but minorities cannot play whites.

They should overall keep to the source as possible ,but race really doesn't matter for this case of Peter Parker. Look at the Karate Kid with Jaden Smith.

My take... As long as the story and execution of the movie is good, it doesn't really matter if the lead character is black or white... Well, why not brown, or yellow... A superhero does not rely on being a certain race... There was a Japanese Spiderman... Or have you folks forgotten? If Deserves the part, then just give to him. At least Mr Glover said that he'd like to audition for the part and not just have it handed over to him.

Exactly what i'm saying. Spiderman is the most universal hero that has had his race changed many times and been thrown into different cultures that he could be done by anyone. It's great that he'd like to audition like everybody else and not have it handed to him just because he's black.

Airbender's main leads initially couldn't really have been interpreted as white because it was stringent based on the fact it was set in a primarily Asian/Native American world. Many people forget what Asian really means. Asian initially describes the Middle East ,India, South/North/Eastern Asia, Siberia, , the Philippines and Indonesia ; the biggest most diverse continent of the world. It could be considered justifiable to cast Sokka and Katara as whites if they are Siberian (or the show's equivalent of that). Also when the Fire Nation was cast, Indians maybe were chosen as well as Middle Easterns because as i recall , the Agni Kai root word "Agni" comes from the Hindu god of fire. The Reason why the Air Nmoads are mixed could be because as with the case of Pathik, maybe refugees from the other four nations that were nonbenders came to them and learned how to bend the air , or to get away form the war.

I think the issue with that is (and this is probably the same issue that DC is currently having right now with all of their legacy characters) that non-whites seem to have a much easier time relating to white characters than vice versa. This is probably because the white race is seen as the "generic" race, so there wouldn't be any issues with ethnicity or culture, as most white heroes aren't typically portrayed as anything other than WASPs.
I believe the problem is that is the perception. I also agree that white is seen as generic. If I were to describe a character and leave out race, most people would assume the character was white.

I personally believe it's a problem that requires an active solution, not a passive one.

I never watched Last Airbender, so I barely know anything about about it, but I will say this, Last Airbender ISN'T iconic like Spider-man. Like I said before Spider-man is one of the most recognizable fictional characters in media today. Last Airbender doesn't even compare.

Spider-Man is. Peter Parker is not. There's a reason Spider-Man has been adapted into other cultures. Peter Parker on the other hand, does not survive the change. I'm not going to post the pictures again, I've been over this.

People need to stop bringing up Black Panther. Seriously. It's fucking up your whole argument.
I know! And the best part is they don't know why.

I mean black panther is a scientist who and a king of a secret technologically advance nation who's symbol/title is that of a black cat, you could make that about a white guy too.
Lemme explain why. Using story.

Black Panther is the story of a son taking on his his father's mantle, coming fully into leading his people and his culture. Black Panther is the apex of his entire sociological group.

Change his race and you have to change his culture as well, otherwise what you have is a Last Samurai-esque story. Different plot completely. Definitely doable, but completely different story.

Captain America is another. Changing Captain America's race means changing his origin, since his original intent was as a propaganda piece during World War II.

Changing Spider-Man race? No change. The story remains the same.

And of course Steel is a black Iron Man. As much as Apollo is a gay Superman. Yes, you could change Steel's race without any issue.

How would changing his culture change his story?

1. Personally i would love people to have the same perception of race as we do, that it doesn't choose or make the character ,it's people themselves who do so.

2.Bingo.

3.Bingo again.

4. Bingo to infinity!!!

5.Bingo!!!!!!

How would changing his culture change his story?

Change him into Hindu, and the apex of his culture becomes a completely different iconography. Asian? Let's say Japanese, what does the black panther as a symbol mean to them?

Again, to change the Black Panther is to change everything around him. To change Spider-Man? No change to the world around him. No change to his origin. His story. It could happen to anyone. That's the point of being the everyman.

Here's another reason why Glover won't work and it's nothing to do with his race. It's his age. The reboot is supposed to be Ultimate Spider-Man, meaning high school Spider-Man. There are some actors, Nicholas D'Agosto and Aaron Yoo for example, who are in their 30's but still look like they could walk into a high school and pass for students. Donald Glover isn't one of them. He's in his late 20s and he looks it.

And before anyone comes at me about Tobey being 27 when the first movie, not only did Tobey look younger, but he was playing a senior that was about to graduate. A bit of a difference from someone who's nearly 30 and looks like it playing a 15 year old freshman/sophomore.

Glover actually looks his age and what about in 9 or 10 years? Look how old and frumpy Tobey started to look and people started to whine that he was too old. Casting another guy who'll actually be older than Tobey was when he started is doing the same thing.
